Excellent taste, exactly what I want to have. :D
Thanks!

I use a dark background in my list so the BC was looking a bit odd sandwiched between gray tabs and gray column headers. Took a few tries to find a background color that got them all to blend together well, and figured Don's original choice of colors would work well for the text.

However now I cannot not see the lack of border around the BC:

Hi TheQwerty,
Do you use BeyondCompare? What's the purpose of your BeyondCompare icon?

The highlight on hover with a light background looks much better - thank you!

As for the left-side border looking odd without a frame when the BC has a light background...
The more I look at it the more I think something more than a left-side border is needed.

The problem is the list has a border, the column headers are similar in style and color to the tab and tab bars, and the tabs have borders - which creates the feeling that the list is contained within the tab and it's all one object.

The breadcrumb breaks this. It doesn't feel like it is contained within the tab and it makes the tab and list feel disjointed and like separate things. In large part this is because the light colored breadcrumb background breaks the border that went around the list and tab, but I think the big bright breadcrumb backgrounds also do damage to the paradigm.

I don't think adding a left-side border is enough of an improvement and it actually might make it more painfully obvious that the left-side of the left-most tab does not line up perfectly with the list.

I think there's a couple other options that might look better (though maybe Don played with and rejected them privately):
  1. Move the breadcrumb bar above the tab bar - this reunites the tab and list and since the border is around the tab and not the tab bar the breadcrumb to tab bar transition might not look as odd as the tab to breadcrumb to list one.
  2. Remove the border from the list - group the breadcrumb and the list together and put a border around both. This should make it feel like the breadcrumb is connected to the list and the BC+list group is contained in the tab.
  3. Ignore it because we're being too picky. :P

Looks fine to me. Nice work so far! Let's celebrate, with ice cream!
I want XY to serve soft ice cream. Please Don, make XY serve soft ice cream.

@TheQwerty
You're entirely right, BC doesn't look "integrated".
In my mockup of yesterday I did something wrong, because the BC actually extends till the leftmost side of the list but I traced the left border in line with the tabbar. Maybe making the BC as tall as the selected tab looks more pleasant. I'd understand this layout as:
- the tab label is a quick explanation of where I am
- the BC gives me the longer explanation, aka path, of the tab
Makes sense, since what we call AB can contain one-line scripts too, so no real addresses.

Ah indeed! That's a good way of thinking about it too, so maybe the left border would be enough. :?

As a devoted user of the old fashioned gold/yellow stripe on current tab, I'd love to have that stripe extend on BC to left and right of current tab (as needed/when possible) but not within the tab itself so that it appears more as a tab header with a bump on top, if you get what I mean.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Bingo, that's it.

I share your devotion for pixels, but my preferred design is the current factory default (blue and brown) and I find it just perfect as it is down to the last pixel. It would be destroyed by adding any lines.

Don, did you have a chance to look at this yet? Looking at the breadcrumb dropdown from the context menu of the AB for my Downloads folder, its downward path seems to always be out of date, like for example it will keep showing me something I visited earlier in the day even when I generate new forward history by going down then up. Whereas the breadcrumb bar is always up to date. It would be best if both were always in sync.
OK, agreed.
This will make it into 13.20? I still see the same issue in 13.10.0120. I hadn't used AB Breadcrumbs very often in the past, but it's only recently that I noticed they're very broken. Go down into a folder, then up, then down into a different folder, then up: the AB Breadcrumbs simply don't get updated correctly.
Should be fixed in next ver.

grindax wrote:With there being breadcrumbs available in 2 places (AB context menu and BC bars), maybe it would be more accurate to rename 'Show Breadcrumbs' to 'Show Breadcrumb Bars'?

Also, it would be more consistent with the other entries in the Window menu. And even Microsoft uses the term.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc296396.aspx
Shouldn't it then also be 'Show Tab Bars' (Plural)?

That would be a totally different style, and it would have to be connected to the Theme to make sense. Custom breadcrumb colors would then be ignored. Yes, I maybe (some testing would be needed, it's not that easy) can add that in a later version, BC 2.0 or so.
