The highlight on hover with a light background looks much better - thank you!
As for the left-side border looking odd without a frame when the BC has a light background...
The more I look at it the more I think something more than a left-side border is needed.
The problem is the list has a border, the column headers are similar in style and color to the tab and tab bars, and the tabs have borders - which creates the feeling that the list is contained within the tab and it's all one object.
The breadcrumb breaks this. It doesn't feel like it is contained within the tab and it makes the tab and list feel disjointed and like separate things. In large part this is because the light colored breadcrumb background breaks the border that went around the list and tab, but I think the big bright breadcrumb backgrounds also do damage to the paradigm.
I don't think adding a left-side border is enough of an improvement and it actually might make it more painfully obvious that the left-side of the left-most tab does not line up perfectly with the list.
I think there's a couple other options that might look better (though maybe Don played with and rejected them privately):
- Move the breadcrumb bar above the tab bar - this reunites the tab and list and since the border is around the tab and not the tab bar the breadcrumb to tab bar transition might not look as odd as the tab to breadcrumb to list one.
- Remove the border from the list - group the breadcrumb and the list together and put a border around both. This should make it feel like the breadcrumb is connected to the list and the BC+list group is contained in the tab.
- Ignore it because we're being too picky.
