Clickable breadcrumbs.
Respected Don,
I am sorry to say that,it's a shame that windows explorer has clickable breadcrumb navigation since the era
of vista, and XY doesn't has that until now. This is necessary when one jump's from another app to XY,wherein
he will be using mouse to click folders, instead of ctrl+backspace.

Re: Clickable breadcrumbs.
There is no classical breadcrumb around, correct. Deeper reasons, I am afraid, and already discussed several times, as far as I remember.
However (being a mouse lover myself), are you aware of a right click on the folder Icon in a tab heading? (That is equivalent of Ctrl-Backspace.)

Re: Clickable breadcrumbs.
I saw this feature many years ago in xplorer2 for the first time, so I got the impression that he invented it (is that true?). Therefore I did not add it (I don't copy ideas from others.) Later Windows Explorer had it (from x2?) and now it seems (?) to be quite popular and certainly sort of a "public domain idea". If that is so I could add it. No ETA though.

Speedcommander and Dopus also have them, does that mean that they have copied from x2 and what does ETA mean?

ETA = estimated time of arrival. The other question I'd like to know as well.garon wrote:Speedcommander and Dopus also have them, does that mean that they have copied from x2 and what does ETA mean?

Re: Clickable breadcrumbs.
I'm not sure that Bozinis was first to implement this in a file manager. Vista was released in Jan 2007 and the first and second mentions of "breadcrumb" in his changelog were 23 June 07 and 14 February 08.
http://zabkat.com/changes.txt
There is a Wikipedia page on Breadcrumb (navigation)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breadcrumb ... igation%29
Which states:
"Current file managers like Nautilus, Dolphin, Thunar, Mac OS's Finder, SnowBird, and Windows Explorer (on Windows Vista/7) allow breadcrumb navigation, often replacing or extending an address bar."
I get the impression that breadcrumbs appeared first and evolved on web pages, long before they were used in a file manager.

It's older in x2. See http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?p=9081#p9081FeatureCreep wrote:I'm not sure that Bozinis was first to implement this in a file manager. This is your weak point and absolutely wrong position.
Copy ideas, this is the main sign of a good developer. Always be ahead.
Evaluate and apply the idea is quite difficult. There are many ideas. It's worth the time and effort.
Consider copying the good ideas as a positive step. Besides the idea can be always slightly improved.
Another matter of course assign someone else's invention.
I think you understand the difference.
There are rare exceptional cases when when the invention in the field of Software is patented.
Then that is another matter and the subject of money.
I am sure that all will support me.
----------
For example Copernicus copied idea of a telescope. He estimated it. He wasn't guilty that someone was come to mind by such remarkable idea.

Re: Clickable breadcrumbs.
Yes, wrong a certain perspective it is a weak point, but I don't suffer too much from the weakness. I always have enough ideas for me and a couple of other file managers. I don't have to steal.

Re: Clickable breadcrumbs.
Yes please!
Total Commander also has a clickable header for each pane. IMHO this is XYplorer's most frustrating weak-point....
TC and Win Explorer also offer a drop-down list of subfolders for each folder in the path. Neither system is perfect though. On Windows, they>have>arrows>like>this, which takes up space. On TC, a single-click on any part of the folder's name activates the list (whereas a double-click jumps), so you get lots of accidentally opening the lists... x2 is better in this regard, because a single left-click jumps, and a single right-click gives the sub-folder list.
Which ever way it's done though... It has to be all mouseable (no key presses required).
And if you do add this, please add it in a way so that each pane (each tab?) has it's own!

Re: Clickable breadcrumbs.
Choices do seem to generally be a good thing. Just as long as you, obviously, also keep the current control, too, with an option to set the default behavior. kunkel mentions it has to be mouseable - the reason I hate breadcrumbs is precisely that it's only good for mousing. For people like myself who 99% of the time never touch the address bar with the mouse, native Explorer's behavior is maddening in its inability to just tab directly into the address and start editing it. Still, it does make sense to give people things they want, especially things that you can do in native Explorer. But don't make it default! :p

Re: Clickable breadcrumbs.
I agree you don't have to steal and i respect your ideology. But after a certain point a feature starts to become sort of de facto standard and users want to see it because its useful and saves a lot of time.admin wrote:I don't have to steal.
In this case breadcrumbs are not totally new, they've been around in intranets i think, so i would not feel too bad to use them.
I would not call it stealing, its embracing good ideas (and giving the right credits) to make a product better. Its the other way around, the inventor would be flattered to see his/her ideas implemented in other softwares.
My 2 cents.
On a similar note:
Can you explicitly list features somewhere on XY home page that were your brainchild? I know these have TM next to them, but it could be made more obvious by having a separate section for these revolutionary features.

Re: Clickable breadcrumbs.
Well, I don't think respecting the work of others is a freaky ideology (I read this between the lines, might be wrong). It's not an ideology at all, at least not for me. And, yes, I know the idea of stealing as flattery (and how it can be abused as a thin cover for theft). And actually I'm not extremely flattered by Dopus stealing my ideas. This nothing but sucks.
FYI, the TM is just for words. Ideas cannot be protected.

I know they cant be, but it should be made clear that this was your idea.admin wrote:The TM is just for words. Ideas cannot be protected.
Sure, they are documented in changelog, but these features deserve more mention somewhere.
I will try to find time and document these somewhere else.
Thanks.
