On the sorting of directories

Post by joxymot »

Settings allow for directories to be sorted separately, first or last.
Problem is, they still get rearranged each time the sort criterion is changed.
I would much appreciate the option of sorting folders separately from files.
My folders seldom change, and it would be nice always to find them in the same place.
Changing sorting criteria is mostly about files (name/creation etc)

Welcome!

You can make sure that folders don't get mixed up with files by checking "Keep folders on top" in Configuration > General (Sorting section).

Cheers :)

Welcome too.

@zer0: I think the OP figured how to sort folders apart, what he's talking about IMO is how to preserve the sort order of the folders even if the files are sorted by a different criteria. (i.e. folders sorted by name ascending, while files are sorted by mod date, aso)

That wasn't so clear to me. Nevertheless, secondary sorting is possible, but is limited. Help file says:
There's secondary sorting. Simply hold Shift while you click on another column header to secondary-sort by this column. Of course, secondary sorting makes only sense where the primary sorting results in groups. This typically is the case with the following columns:

Ext, Type, and Attr; less so with Size and Dates.

The column that's sorted secondarily is marked by a smaller sorting icon.

I guess this is still not what the OP meant, but let him speak!
For me it would only make sense if you could sort folders apart and on top of that have them sorted by name (asc / desc) regardless of the file sort order.

I understand. But it is not supported currently.

Hi and welcome to the XY forums from me also!

As you've now seen, even requests from new forum users can get implemented in a VERY short time! Now this doesn't happen all the time but given the less than 12 hrs between wish and beta, I hope that you'll find XY to be a even more valuable tool and thus worthy of purchase if you'd not already done so.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Yep, I agree, very nice.
It always annoyed me - but only slightly - to have the folders resort as well, now that's solved too.
Thanks for taking the challenge and being so quick at it.

Edit: Could it be that you broke something in the logic of sorting by adding this?
(See the 2nd item in that screenshot - no manual sorting)

Oops, sorry, cropped the image too much for you to tell.

These are all jpeg images and no folders - otherwise I agree it would be possible...

Can you post the whole list (all columns) so that I can see what's going on?

Sure, but have to do it on my home machine tonight...

Edit: I could reproduce it on my work machine too and it seems that it always affects the first two files in the list only and only if the sort order is descending, see following screenshots...

So you are saying the files' order is not correct when "Sort folders always ascending" is checked? I cannot repro this problem.
...
Ah, got it! There is indeed a bug when there are no folders at all in the listing! Fix comes... :D
