XYplorer hangs searching content of PDF files

Post by pburns »

XYplorer keeps hanging when searching the content of pff files; when this happens a window pops up in xyplorer titled Contents64.exe which says (see attached screen shot) "Could not close the previous instance of this script. Keep waiting?". And the task manager shows a process running under XYplorer named "64-bit iFilter File Contents Extraction Helper" and under that process "Contents64.exe".

This happens with many different pdf files and I can open all of the pdf files with pdf viewers and search with no problems so this looks like a XYplorer issue.

I have tried various configuration settings but the issue keeps happening.

I've attached two screen shots

Hi and welcome,

A few questions:
1. What PDF reader do you use?
2. Are you using the latest stable version of XYplorer (currently (20.60.0200)?
3. Does using a fresh instance of XYplorer, help at all?

I use two: Master PDF Editor and PDF Exchange Editorr.

I'm using the latest stable version: 20.60.0200

No, killing and relaunching XYplorer doesn't make any difference.

According to this FAQ, the second method would force XYplorer to use the known compatible PDF Exchange Editor? You probably also want to test while disabling Tools > Configuration > Shell Integration > 64-bit Windows > Use 64-bit IFilters.

By the way, if you click the link in my first post you will find a way to run XYplorer with a fresh config, which is different from killing and restarting XYplorer.

Note that there has been an important improvement here in v20.60.0202 which will speed up the content search.

The next official version, v20.60.0300, will be published soon.

Thanks for all the help but even the latest version still hangs while searching pdf file content; the behavior is slightly different whether use 64 bit iFilters is enables or not but in all cases XYplorer keeps hanging. This appears to be a bug.

Does this post constitute a bug report or is there a more formal way to do so? I don't see any way to file a bug report with XYplorer anywhere else.

This is the right way to report bugs.

When you say keeps hanging you mean that error message? ("Could not close the previous instance of this script. Keep waiting?") Between starting the search and the appearance o this message, do you do anything?

Yes, I start the search and this window pops up. If I choose Yes the window pops up again, if I choose No XYplorer moves on to a new file and then the window pops up again. If I try and abort the search by clicking "Stop (Esc)" then XYplorer completely hangs (see attached file xyplorerBug_3.png).

Very strange. Could it be that some stranded Contents64.exe process is hanging around? Please close any XYplorer instance, then open Task Manager and look for Contents64.exe. If you see it kill it.

The task manager shows the content64.exe running under the ifilter (see attached png); if you try and end the content64.exe task it hangs, if you delete the upper task XYplorer moves to the next file to search and hangs again.

Hm.

Could you send me one of those PDF files and tell me what content you are looking for? Maybe I can reproduce it here.

As of the latest version update 20.80.0200 the problem seems to be resolved. Initial test all working with no problems!
