Absolutely agree. Thanks, Jerry.
Don't even need the "*" in visual filter -- "11" works just fine.

Jerry and I are just saying that the existing behavior could (hopefully) be easily tweaked to make TAF even better. I haven't even used VF since the enhancements to TAF... (and I don't need to worry about forgetting that the VF is on -- which has been an issue once or twice in the past).

Not always. I have 3 files that begin with 00 and if I don't include the *, I end up also seeing all the other files containing 00 somewhere in the name.

My problem with the * approach that Don has decided on, is that it asks the minority (I will assume) of XYplorer users who don't want the quirky standard behavior to do something special every time it's a problem, instead of simply allowing it to be turned off once as their default. It also complicates what I think everybody here would agree should remain be a simple mechanism, and sets an undesirable precedent for introducing other sorts of behavior, with different marker characters or other search syntax. Once you open the door a little...

Exactly -- which is why I'd love to see a tweak to enable the simple, consistent behavior...

XYPlorer is already the most sophisticated file manager in the known universe.
Making it furhter unncessarily complex may hurt Don's revenue.
Always boldly seek out innovative ways to enhanace productivity while keeping the functionality plainly simple and fast.
Just my 2 cents.

Fully agree with the first part. Believe me, I've been a paid user of XY for well over 7 years now, and there's nothing else that can touch it!

Adding a tweak won't make it more complex from a user's perspective -- it only adds power to those who want it. That's why I asked for a tweak! :)

Of course, debates should always be encouraged. Thanks, Avsfan.

What would the simple, consistent behaviour be?

Precisely what Jerry was describing -- that hitting the same key twice (such as "11") will jump to the first occurrence of that double character (i.e. the first occurrence of "11") rather than the second occurrence of that character (i.e. the second occurrence of "1") as is currently the case.

The reason it's simple and consistent is that currently, if you type "12" it will jump to the first occurrence of "12" (which makes sense and is expected). In fact, if you type "112" it'll jump to the first occurrence of "112" but typing "11" will still jump to the second occurrence of "1" (not what I want).

Having "11" jump to the second occurrence of "1" is completely inconsistent with the way the rest of how XY's TAF functionality works. However, it *is* apparently consistent with the way WE works. That's why I'm asking for a tweak -- I'd like XY to be completely self-consistent *for me* (and for anyone else who wants it to work that way), which will allow the current behavior for those who expect XY to work the way WE does.

Personally, I don't really care what WE does -- XY's way is better! :)

Yeah. Current behaviour doesn't really make any sense to me, as I said here http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 848#p89848
Count me in for the tweak.

And while I may not use this feature, having a "behave like WE"/"behave like XY" toggle in this case makes perfect sense and gives user option for their preferred style.

Reading this thread, it seems that WE style doesn't really make sense.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

:om: Hm. You know, I will give you the tweak just to show you that the current behavior does make sense. You will thank me for not adding that tweak as a feature.

Well, since I need to pay the rent and the coffee, I have to care a little about user expectations...

How do you guys like the new "modified" behavior of TAF?

Code: Select all

Type Ahead Find: Now you can press * (asterisk) as end-of-pattern marker. Using this you can find "aa" by typing "aa*". Before it was not possible to find "aa" because repeated letters are treated as individual patterns by common Windows standards.
Note that * is NOT a wildcard in this context, and of course it is not part of the pattern.
Note that "a*a" will work as well, so * could also be called end-of-repeated-character-counts-as-new-pattern-mode marker.
I prefer the "classic" behavior (v12.70.0000).
