Zip/Rar

Post by diarrhio »

It's me again.

Do you have any plans on adding native zip/rar support to tracker? I've noticed some of the other free file manager's have them, but I just like tracker so much better :)

I'm sure you'll ask why I want this, since I can just install winrar and winzip. Well, I'm trying to get away from having all of these clients just for compression, as well as cluttering up my shell context menu (which is already way cluttered).

Seems like compression should just be part of a file manager's basic functionality (which windows pitifully tried to impelement). Currenly I am using 7-zip, since it can handle almost any format, but it's context menu is limited (it just has one entry called "Add to Archive...". I tried some of the other freeware zipping utils and they all had some fairly major shortcomings.

BTW, any progress on that icon stuff? Not pushing. Just curious.

Thanks

This is one of the most-wished wishes, and it's quite high on my to-do list. IMHO this should be built into the OS file system, but it isn't, so yes: I plan to do it.

Unfortunately not, but I did not look very hard anymore the last time. I still have the impression that nobody has done it, probably because Tortoise is the only app using that stuff. Or do you know any other?

Just because WinMe+ does it... I think archive stuff is better left to archive programs like Winzip and my favourite 7-zip (which is improving, a recent update added windows drag and drop support). Making TrackerV3 handle archive stuff as good as those would be a major undertaking...

What icon stuff?
test everything. hold on to the good.

Not just because WinMe+ does it, but also because other file managers do it
But I agree with you: if it turns out to be a major undertaking to make it good I will stick to the position I took in similar cases: leave special stuff to special apps.

Yah. If it's too much of an undertaking, I'll live without it. It just seems like it would be a nice fit, especially since you have some other kick arse features that aren't "standard".

Although, there are lots of free libraries available on the net to do archival stuff (I don't know if they exist in VB though). In fact, I believe you can probably just use 7-zip, and provide better context menu support for it. I really like/miss the conveniece of "Add to <filename>.zip", etc. context menu items.

As for the icons. TortoiseSVN/CVS are the only ones that I know of that use icon overlays. I am curious, though, isn't the standard "shortcut" overlay the same thing? You handle those just fine. Must be some other mechanism at work. :)

Yes, it is the same thing technically, only that those standard overlays have fixed positions in the system image list AND direct API support: one of this would be enough already, but the special overlays have none of it.
