There are two options, that are certainly possible, but that I can't find:
1) automatic column sizing when a new tab is open.
1) To have the column visibility save-able and used as default for all new views. I can of course set the visibility of column on/off, but this is not persistent. If I switch to another folder, then back, the column visibility is restored to some default.

Thanks for #1.
But for #1 and #2 to be persistent, I have just found out that I have to use:
View > Folder View Settings > Save folder view as Default.
