My Network Places is mandatory?

I don't have "My Network Places" (MNP) showing in the tree, but I do need to have a tab pointing a deeply-nested location on the network. Having trawled through the changelog, I found this:

    * Now, if you try to browse a network location while you unchecked 
      "Show My Network Places", you get a message "You cannot go to a 
      network location because you opted to hide My Network Places." and 
      no browsing is attempted.

Considering that we can enable MPN, go to a location, disable MNP and still browse up and down that branch, it seems a bit strange to need to enable it in the first place. May I ask why?
