Extraction of icons from DLLs for CTBs

Post by zer0 »

Fiddling with icons for CTBs, I remembered that shell32.dll has a really nice collection of icons already well-sized for large CTBs. I know that in Windows Explorer it's possible to change a shortcut's icon by navigating to a file and any icons that are available within that file will be displayed in a rectangular gallery as per screenshot below

Can this please be made possible in XYplorer too?

What? the use of the icon's or the dialog?

Those icons can be browsed and used with XY:

other Icon viewer/extractors are listed here f.ex.:

The dialogue. It provides a very good visual representation of those icons and saves the hassle of working out a particular icon's number. There are 80 of them in shell32.dll after all  Also, it's unknown what icons in an individual DLL look like so without a graphical view it's pretty much trial and error to find a suitable one.
