Action Log and Save Settings TB

Post by zer0 »

Quick version: I'd like to be able to handle saving of "Action Log" better.

Long version: I have a TB called "Save Settings" and, by default, it saves settings that have changed. With the introduction of "Undo/Redo", I have noticed that every time I move do anything to a file that can be undone/redone the colour of this TB changes from "Green" to "Brown" as if to imply that a setting has changed. But has it? This is what my gripe is with.

Don, if you recall, I reported (http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3582) back in May that this TB icon changes even if no change has been made. Though, you did say that you count "OK" as change, which is debatable. So I'm quite sensitive to that icon :P

Let's come back to the question that I've asked in the paragraph before last. I am disputing the current situation that implies that an addition to "Action Log" is classified as a setting. It does not have a "feel" of a setting, but rather a by-product of a setting. In a way, it's like "History", i.e a feed of data stemming from enabling a setting.

Now onto a possible solution. Yes, I would like to keep a log of undoable/redoable operations between sessions, but I don't like the fact that each addition to it is classed as a change of settings. It is also quite unlikely that an Action Log, on its own, from one installation would be useful at another, unlike INI, udc.dat and ks.dat

There are two ways to grant my wish. One way is to offer granularity, so a user can choose what settings are saved when he/she left-clicks that TB. The default action would be to save everything. This way, I can untick "Action Log", but still have it saved when I exit XYplorer, because "Save Settings on Exit" is ticked in my "Configuration". Another way, probably too late for this, is to have "Action Log" presented as "History", so it's still saved between sessions, but doesn't write to a .DAT file nor does it trigger that icon's change.

P.S. While looking into this issue, I noticed that "Save Catalog" is part of "Save Settings" TB's context menu, even if it has been removed from "Features". It should not be there ;)

Actually I think you are right. Action log does not belong there. I'll remove it.

And thanks for "Save Catalog" tip. :)

Well, being the one who asked for this in the first place, you can see why I'm not pleased by this at all. Let's be clear, I agree with the "not a setting" part of zer0's post, but I still would really like to have a way to manually save the action log.

Because right now we're back to you assume XY will be closed properly (otherwise we loose the AL), but that might not always be the case. Plus, there's the case of very rarely quitting XY and still wanting to make sure the AL is saved regularly. I also like to save everything before I backup my XY folder, and I would really hate it to be forced to close XY & restart it just so that the AL could be saved... :?

Again, I'm fine with it not being part of the whole "settings" thing that affects the TB button, etc but I would like it if, when using "Save All Settings" the AL was saved as well. Sure, it's not a setting per-se, but many things are not and are saved then as well (quick example on top of my head: correct me if I'm wrong but both pane.ini files in Panes\1 & Panes\2 are saved, and include their history. Not a setting, yet not a problem either ;))

I think nobody could have a problem when "Save All Settings" also silently updates "action.dat", so I'm fine with that.
