Potential Buyer Questions

I tried a few searches for answers but forgive me if they are elementary and stick out like a sore thumb.

I am seriously considering a purchase of version 8 with dual panes but have a couple of questions.

1. How do you save the layout and setup of XYplorer?

2. How do you create new tabs in both panes that are saved permanently? (I'd like to create tabs of folders I visit quite a bit and for them to stay and not have to reset them every time I start XY)

3. How do you specify a specific view for folders (like folders designated as pictures are set to show thumbnails while the default remains at details)

Hi!

1. The philosophy of XYplorer has always been: startup next time exactly as you closed down last time. Everything (ok, 99%) is saved and restored. The saving is done automatically on closing the app if Save settings on exit is checked (Configuration | Startup & Exit) -- which it is be factory default.

2. New tab = Ctrl+T. Creates a new tab on the active pane. It will stay there forever, until you close it -- also across sessions (see point 1) -- but you can change its location.
Additionally you can lock a tab (see tab header's context menu). A locked tab will stay at its original location always.

You've just experienced another major reason why you should purchase XY! Notice the speedy reply by the author? That's not at all unusual here but it IS unusual for other app developers to respond that promptly...some may not reply for days/weeks, if at all.

It must be noted, however, that your tree structure is not saved and restored. Only your last location before closing XY is. I must say that I am a little surprised that Don gave it a 1% Curiously enough, XY will remember your last destination in a collapsed tree branch after a restart (tree branch is collapsed before restart) and will auto-focus on the correct folders as you delve deeper.

welcome to the forum and to XYplorer, I think the behaviour of XYplorer is intuitive and predictable out of the box, it doesn't need a lot of tweaking and doesn't need experienced users, that's why it's fine for me too

As Don explained you may close XY and the next time you'll find it as you left in the previous session.

I think the very best way to have a quick grasp of XY features after downloading it, is to read and to look at the screenshots of the tour: XY tour, I think it's a good starting point to highlight well the benefits a prospective user may find in XY.

I'm a very visual person so I prefer buttons and mouse use instead of keyboard, and I also have some tabs always opened to the same folders just like you would like to do, but altough being visual, I mostly use the key combination Control + T to open a new tab and I feel fine locking them with Control + L to avoid an accidental closure.

The toolbar button to save a folder view is present in the default configuration, it's the blue "F" button. If you're visual oriented like me, one of the first thing I may suggest to a new user, is left clicking on the toolbar, choose "Customize Toolbar..." and there you will be able to add a few buttons to the toolbar you might find useful, for example I would like to suggest "Toggle Active Pane" and "Tags" which I find useful to have a nice experience respectively with the dual pane mode introduced with XY v8 and with the file tagging functionality (to show the tag column, left click on the column headers and tick "Tag").

Of course, the Tree (or more precisely, the folder structure) might change all the time and isn't remembered (the correct folders being auto-selected come from your history) and neither is the content of your List!
But, it's very easy to have your Tree be saved/remembered each time : switch to a MiniTree!

Also, for a group of Tabs one uses frequently, you could use a little script to re-open all the tabs you want when triggered, which can be done in one click (Catalog item) or through one KS. Or you can also put all the folders (Tabs' locations) in a category on your Catalog (and there's an option "Insert As New Category Here/Tabs" to "save" current tabs in your Catalog), then right-click on said category and chose "Open Folders in Tabs" to have them all reopened...

To me its a very low prio actually especially since you plan to implement tab sets somewhere down the line.
