very slow content search

Post by M.Me »

Hello,
We have been using XYplorer in the office for a good month now. From time to time we have to search many docm files (approx. 1000) for content.
The content search in XYplorer is very slow compared to the content search in Windows Explorer.

For comparison:
Windows (11) Explorer searches 100 files in about 3 seconds.
The XYplorer takes 14 seconds.

The settings listed below make no difference:
Falling back to IFilters of the other bit size [Shell Integration - 64-bit Windows]
or
Use 64-bit IFilters for the content search [Shell Integration - 64-bit Windows].

Are there any tips to speed up the search?

Thanks for the feedback

Is Windows configured to use the index search service?

And apart from that I'd exclude XY from your Antivirus engine

XY does not use the Windows search index, but performs a live search instead. Live cannot beat the index in speed, but it can beat it in accuracy.

Everything can use the Windows search index and can be used from inside XY: viewtopic.php?t=23224

Hello,
Thank you very much for your answers.

We will take a look at “Everything”.

Today we tested the content search in a folder with 752 files with XYplorer and Windows Explorer on all computers (10 computers) in the office.
The search was similar on 9 computers.
XYPlorer slow / Windows Explorer fast.
The number of files found was always identical.

However, we noticed different behavior on one computer.
With the setting “ Use 64-bit IFilters for the content search [Shell Integration - 64-bit Windows]” activated, the content search also ran slowly as on all other computers.

However, as soon as the settings “Use 64-bit IFilters for the content search [Shell Integration - 64-bit Windows]” and “Falling back to IFilters of the other bit size [Shell Integration - 64-bit Windows]” were deactivated, we observed the following.
The first search was just as slow as with the setting “Use 64-bit IFilters for the content search [Shell Integration - 64-bit Windows]” (approx. 1:51 min). However, the next searches were much faster (approx. 12 seconds).

On the other 9 computers without the setting “Use 64-bit IFilters for the content search [Shell Integration - 64-bit Windows]” the search ran without results.

The configuration of XYplorer is identical on all our computers.

What could be the reason for this one computer behaving like this?

Best regards and many thanks for your feedback.

That one computer obviously must have 32-bit iFilters installed while the others have not?

These are the IFilters that are installed on this computer (see picture).
For the docm files, the same IFilter with the same version is also installed on all other computers.

Installed in the x86 path -> 32-bit

And now the same picture for one of the other 9 computers?

And there you have it.

1. Your computers aren't identical
2. For whatever reason: Using the 32-bit filter seems to be faster than using the 64-bit one

Best option: Use Everything and the script integration so you'll have access to the Windows indexing service that is most likely making Windows Explorer so fast
