XYplorer lost tags after move files to external disk

Post by lalandwonder »

I have moved the local files (already tagged) from my computer to an external hard drive via XYplorer, but the files on the external drive do not show the tags.

After moving the files to the external drive, I have deleted the local files from the computer.

Is there any way I can retrieve the tags and make the files on the external drive show the tags?

Basically just run search and replace (case sensitive!) on <xydata>\tag.dat text file is probably your easiest option, hoping you kept the same folder hierarchy, make sure to make a backup of the file first, don't change the sort or anything else, and once finished use "Tags | Reload Tag Database", then in XY config dialog run Tags\Options\Database Check.

If the external drive is formatted with NTFS, you can set the tags to ADS (Alternate Data Streams), but it will take more time.

I only use NTFS tags and the tags are preserved
regardless of the tool used for copying (Explorer, FastCopy Total Commander, XYplorer
External disks are NTFS formated of course.

I let Everything index tags and comments.
so finding them is only a few seconds in XY and Total Commander.
