I am sorry to ressurect this post after 7 (!) years, but I think I might have found the issue by accident: I noticed a few moments ago that I only see duplicate extensions if Windows is configured to hide extensions for known file types.
If the extensions are shown in Windows/Explorer (if the following value is set to 0) XYplorer shows file extensions correctly in Recycle Bin for all files, including for unknown file types.

Should XYplorer behave differently depending on this Windows Explorer setting?
(I am guessing that only advanced users use XYplorer, so everyone disables this setting immediately after installing Windows...
