That's not the output of
CTRL+click on that menu item
Thanks, that was not clear to me what to do exactly. That is some sort of puzzle or patients game!? Why would you ever hide potential very important information in such a way!? I think I found the hidden 'what can make XY slow' list now.
Some items in the list can be found in the settings (again a sort of puzzle one has to solve), some I did not manage to find. I changed all I could find to the suggested value, which should be the faster one. Still no improvement.
So next I deleted XYPlorer.ini, which seems to be the file where all the settings are stored -- in an attempt to reset XY to meaningful values. Also no improvement in the copy speed.
Those are the settings now:
Code: Select all
XYplorer: 25.40.0400 - 30-Day Trial Version - Day 1
Startup Time: 866 ms at 21.01.2024 14:57:57

1) A 'Yes' might slow down file operations and browsing:

2) The bigger (more), the slower:

4) A 'Yes' might slow down selecting an item:

5) A 'Yes' might speed up startup:
Cache network servers: Yes
Servers: servers.ini has 0 servers
No network browsing on startup: No
Network enumeration: 0 (speed is system-specific)
Pre-check availability of servers: No (on some systems a Yes makes it slower!)
6) A 'Yes' might slow down startup:
Cache folder sizes: No
Reconnect mapped network drives on startup: No
7) Column Layout: Name,Ext,Size,Type,Modified,Created
Slowdown cause number one: An active virus scanner can severely slow down file operations and make XYplorer less responsive. Especially Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Defender can have a dramatic negative effect on speed. Try to add XYplorer.exe and XYcopy.exe to the exceptions.

Maybe your Windows system has a lot of background noise. In the latest beta there is a way to suppress the noise with a tweak:
Here is how to tweak:

I did try that tweak. Does not make a difference. I do not seem to have other hobbies and spent again way too many hours testing (just kidding, it is very frustrating to need to spent a large amount of the weekend to play beta tester). I finally was able to get closer to the cause. The problem is a USB-Hub. I only have two USB 3 Ports and need to rely on a Hub unfortunately. What is strange, is that there are combinations which work and others which do not:
Not working (reliable, without copy interruptions) ar three different external USB enclosures, connected to the hub, when using XY or Explorer. But all those USB drives do work with Salamander, Opus and CopyHandler (in Explorer)!!!???!!!
So go figure! The hub seems to be the bad boy, but some programs do not have a problem with it, while others do. Besides this I do not experience problems with that hub (TP-Link UH700 7-Port USB 3.0 HUB inklusive Netzadapter). I changed from another hub more than a year ago, where I also had strange effects (I do not remember which exactly). The other hub was the CSL - USB 3.0 Hub Active - 10 Gbps - 7 Port Splitter - with Power Supply Active.
To make the puzzle even more strange: another USB drive (with the same SSD internally, I just swapped the SSD between different USB enclosures) works well with XY and Explorer when connected to the USB hub. So some Chip combinations of USB-Hubs and USB enclosures -- in combination with XY or Explorer (and other programs like Files) are problematic!? That tells me to be uber careful with USB hubs, but also to have a copy of Salamander ready, just in case. I have another hub (passive in that case), which works fine in all combinations. This hub is from Warrky, but not available any longer. And I consider taking a closer look at Directory Opus, which is still in development and also worked fine. I hate when something is not working and it is pointless to try to blame someone here, but it just sucks.
PS.: Using CopyHandler with XY does not seem to be possible. The project seems not active and there is no relevant command line option to include it with XY, as far as I can see.

Well, my experience is different. Contrary to what I said before, setting the CustomCopyNoDoEvents tweak makes my copying even faster. I'm surprised. I've never seen this kind of speed before. So it's unfortunate that this thread didn't bring you any improvement, but it definitely brought a totally unexpected speed boost to XYplorer.
I
will might (the tightness has its drawbacks) make the tweak the factory default in the next version.

No Donald, that is a misunderstanding. The tweaks setting did not solve _my_ speed problems, because they were related to the hub [1]. After further testing I see that my external hubs are working fine, but not the hub in-between, which is in my monitor built-in (I forgot that all signals go through that first). So likely the problems I had with speed of external drives were always hub related since 2020, when I had got the new monitor, but it was not apparent as the hub seemed to work -- which it did, but not flawless as it turns out now... :-o
So I am happy I should be able to continue (and expand) my use of XY. What I still do not understand is why Explorer and XY were heavily affected by that problematic hub, while Salamander, Opus and CopyHandler were not affected in the same way!?
[1] I did not test without the problem hub, if the tweak brings a speed boost, because I was mainly concerned to get 1.5 hour copy time down to a few minutes and not shaving off seconds from the latter. But surely it is welcome when the new option brings a speed boost!
