Portable is now Flat?

Post by zer0 »

Just notice that terminology changed in the download thread and on the main site too. But why? Portable wasn't broken and it's not IKEA, so...? :?

The previous terminology was misleading some users. Calling one package "Portable" seemed to imply that the other package contained a non-portable version of XYplorer which is not true, of course.

But then, by the same token, "Installer" package seems to imply that it contains a non-portable version, which it does not.

OK, maybe. I tried to make it clearer here at the bottom: http://www.xyplorer.com/installedfiles.htm

Don't get me wrong on this Don, but I have never seen any portable software that wasn't named "portable" or "standalone" but instead "flat". There is no such association between flat and portable, at least I can't find one :) I'd estimate, 95% of your users know what "portable" means but are curious about the term "flat". Do you really have to change it for the very minority?

I'm afraid highend is right.

"Portable" is what people understand.

I also agree with this! Instead of portable or flat, I'd just use "No-Install" which I've seen on other sites.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

I like the word portable too.

By the way I DO see it trying to modify registry upon start when I run the portable version.
Why is this ? Please disable or remove the registry writing feature.

Could you list what registry *writes* you observe the portable version make?

And... the actual file name that is in URL link has 'no_install" as part of file name...so...why not just call it what it is?

nas8e9: you lost a bracket on quote tag in last post.

Thanks for the discussion! You convinced me and I will go back to the terminology I had used before switching to "Portable": "No-Install".
