File operations freezes/hangs XYplorer for 10-15 seconds

Post by sgspecker »

Whenever I copy, delete, create new folder, and (sometimes) when renaming files/folders XYplorer appears to hang (or freeze) for about 10-15 seconds. And, if I click in the application (or sometimes, even if I don't), the menubar becomes a white, blank line, too. After that delay, everything seems to be working normally ... but it's still pretty annoying.

I'm currently using version 10.10.0000, but have noticed this for quite a few revisions. My Dell laptop is running Windows XP. After reviewing another post, I disabled Symantec Antivirus and our firewall, but that didn't seem to change anything.

Any ideas on how I could improve this?

Do you have Configuration > File Operations > Enable background processing, enabled and applied to all operations?

No, Enable background processing is not enabled at all. Is that my problem?

Most likely: it enables handing off file operations to a separate process so that the main window isn't blocked during those operations.

Enable background processing will probably improve it, but foreground processing is not the real cause for the issue. I'm working with XYplorer daily since 1997 on various OSs from Win95 to Win7/64 and never ever experienced such a freeze, so there must be other factors involved.

A delay on deletions, for example, has been linked to an overcrowded recycle bin. Also security software is a usual suspect.

I have encountered this in the past and my background processing is enabled. Just yesterday, while in the final stages of moving a file, XYplorer's main window went cloudy white aka not responding. And, when it came back from oblivion, the toolbar was gone

I'm getting this, is there any way to figure out what's going on here?

I also have this problem.

Background processing is enabled, also an external copy handler (TeraCopy).

What seems very indicative to me is the fact that even simple file/folder renaming can precipitate the freeze.
For that, we cannot blame some massive file processing or CPU "steeling" by a background process.
It seems (and I could be wrong) that there may be some internal XYplorer updating of file/folder listings (maybe some history), or so.
Could there be something in this ? I deleted the pane histories - but no use.

Thanks.

I have no anti-viral program running actively in the background (I scan what I download),
I also do NOT have these active background programs: file back-up, file indexing (like Everything), etc.

These freezes don't happen with Explorer++.

That is why I was thinking of XYplorer.
Could it be XYplorer's undo history ?

Thanks for the rapid reply.

Since I am just an amateur (but a paying customer), and You are the smart computer geek,
can You come up with some solutions or further suggestions to try (instead of me) ?

Much appreciated ...

Thanks again.

Good answer, and a sense of humor.

I will check this post again in a few days, may someone else gets the muse.

To the XYplorer programers ... Does this give You any ideas ?

Quote :
Fixed: Right click context menu: Still crashes caused by PowerArchiver shell extension - fixed by initializing command string to 0 (32/64).

Mind You, I do NOT have the PowerArchiver installed (while I do have these problems with XYplorer),
it's just this "initializing command string to 0 (32/64)" that intrigued me.
I don't have a clue what it means, but You smart guys will know.

Slightly similar, the media player KmPlayer was freezing & crashing all the time, tons of useless confusion & comments on the web,
but one forum got it right - You simply get rid of FFDshow (add KmPlayer to exceptions) & all the KmPlayer problems are gone.
It was just one single culprit, but a very common program - installed on many computers.

Maybe similarly, there is just one common culprit causing the XYplorer problems, we just need to figure out which one.
It would have to be a common program, otherwise we would not have so many people experiencing these XYplorer problems.

One last thought - I don't want to offend You guys, but just playing the devil's advocate (or something like Dr Faust for You good Germans).
Say, there is a bad interaction between the program "BadWare" and XYplorer, XYplorer crashes & BadWare does not (in spite of the incompatibility).
BadWare is tough, XYplorer is weak ... You can blame the other guy, OR make XYplorer resistant - like the Total Commander example above !
Of course, the hard part for You guys is to reproduce problems and to pinpoint the culprit.

Thanks for Your hard work with this wonderful program !
