Persistent thumbnail mode

I'm currently trying xyplorer, and i hit a little snag with thumbnail mode.

I usually use dual pane mode with details view, but when i go to my "images"-folder, i would like to switch to a "single pane-thumbnails view" mode and browse through my pictures, including sub folder.

Problem is: whenever i switch folders, the view reverts back to details view, so i'd have to click "thumbnails" everytime i go to a different folder.

Is there a way to turn on thumbnails mode for image-folder-browsing and turn it off afterwards for normal folders?

Enable "Folder View Settings" (menu View) and save the Thumbnails mode for your "images" folder.

Ok, that works on a "per-folder"-basis, thank you so far.

But that means, i have to save the thumbview for every subfolder in my "images"-folder?!
Thats fine for a static folder on my hd, but what if i get, say, a thumbdrive with pictures on it, i'd have to enable thumbview for all folders on there?
And then i get another one, same procedure? Or a DVD?

Let's say i have an archive disk with images sorted into folders by date.
It's for one year, and i made daily pictures, that's 365 folders i'd have to save thumbview for, if i wanna jump in and out of them. :/

Is there a way to just say "from now on, all folders i open shall be in thumbview mode" ?

There might be workaround with the default view... can i script changes to the default view?

FVS would allow two things:
1. For paths that you know should always have thumbnail view, you can define a FVS and check Include subfolders. That way, both folders as well as complete drives (e.g. E:\) including all subfolders will be shown in thumbnail view.
2. I'd recommend *not* defining a default FVS because that way, whenever you change to any folder that doesn't have a specific FVS set, it will revert to the default FVS. By not setting a default FVS, once you've entered the first image folder and set the view you want, it will retain that view until you change it or hit a folder with a set FVS.

Automatic "smart" image folder detection is not implemented. I know that Explorer does it and I have the impression that many users seem to hate it.

Note that FVS also supports parts of names so you could state *images* as folder to apply the settings to. This will help if your folders are called "images" (which at least is often the case in webdesign).

Took some digging to find it (edit in "Manage Folder Views" and edit in "Folder View Settings" appearently are two different things), but that checkbox helps a lot.

I tried that "smart" thing in other managers, and it left me thoroughly unimpressed, i'm with you on that one.
I just needed a quick way to switch between two views based on a "session" kind of deal, the subfolder checkbox combined with a thumbnail toggle keybind should suffice.

Yes this has often struck me as odd and has confused me from time to time. I've expected to see an edit button under the Managed Folder Views button. The distinction makes some sense but it would feel more intuitive to have the two things merged.

      dialog from the list: Select a Folder View and click OK, or 
      double-click a Folder View.
      You also can delete Folder Views from here: Select a Folder View 
      and press DEL (or use the item's context menu). Note that 
      deletions are only performed when you OK the dialog.

Looks much better - thanks. I wasn't able to comment initially because of the issue with the Sync Select screen appearing instead. But this feels much more intuitive and much more obvious. Looking at it afresh this morning I wonder whether the Manage Folder Views screen should also include the Remove, Edit and Copy/Save As functions as well - managing folder views suggests a number of things not just edit. Just a thought.

Remove (Delete) and Edit is there, but not as buttons. So you mean there should be buttons for these functions? Copy As is an idea, but later...

Not impressed, to be honest Don, with the new FVS management interface...

1) Continuity of the workflow is being broken as double-clicking a particular view closes that window to open "Edit Folder View". Since the latter is a child of the former, it can be superimposed on top.
2) Stemming from point 1), this functionality suffers from the same syndrome as List Management -- you can't edit more than one view without having to relaunch the dialogue window. This "loop" is very annoying and wastes time.

A much better approach would be to have an interface without such "loop" and to be able to create a template with an ability to define multiple folders per set of settings.

Yes, agreed. But I had to make a decision taking also other factors into acount (time, economy). Still the current interface is clearly better than what we had before. It can be improved in a later stage.

True. However, as is often the case, if something is around for a while people tend to try to adapt to it. This means that, when the change finally comes around, toys will be thrown out of prams in protest. It's a short-term gain though.

Correct it would make it a single location for managing views. At the moment the function of the edit and remove (in the menu) appear to be limited to the current view. Zero has expressed similar thoughts.

Having said that I am happy with where it is now. Further progress would be nice but I'd rather have tags 2.0 and background processing 2.0 first!
