Update website screenshots

Post by zer0 »

Don,

This is low-prio for when you have time -- could you please update XYplorer's screenshots that you use on the main site?

I don't want to sound like a picky bastard, but a great range of XY versions that are shown doesn't say much for consistency. This especially goes for pre-9.00 screenshots that still sport the old skool XYplorer icon. By the same token, Customize Toolbar pic does not reflect 2 tick-boxes that it now has, UDCs' menu image shows 'Apply' button that's no longer there, rename menu image has "Remove Diacritics" missing. The list goes on. At best, it's a bit sloppy (no offence!) and at worst it's misrepresenting the product. This is particularly bad for software that's updated almost every day (sometimes several times a day).

Also, all screenshots are done on Windows XP. While that's an OS that features often amongst desktop machines, it's very much on its way out. No product that thinks of itself as latest and greatest should feature only screenshots on Win XP. It's like having a 1967 Ford Mustang 500 and showcase it in front of rusty, crumbling garage.

Also, it would be great to have screenshots shown with gallery-effect when clicked on, with the background fade. Currently, screenshots are linked directly, so in order to change between them one has to go back and click on the next screenshot. That's additional work (for us). With a "gallery", we can just click through shots without navigating back and forth. An example of what I mean can be seen here: http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-live ... ilable-now (click on any thumb below the embedded flash video).

All in all, screenshots and how they are presented could do with some sprucing up. Yes, I appreciate that coding, updating help files, research and real life take up virtually all of your day. If you are pressed for time, I think the community would happily post their snaps -- they can also be added to the Wiki :wink:

If wanted, happy to provide screen shots of XYplorer running on Windows 7 with Aero enabled.

I agree because outdated screenshots can really affect a potential users opinion of the product...when I've seen that on some other sites, I wonder what's going on...so even if they are not from the most recent official vers, they should be at least from the prior one...some may not change other than title, but still it looks less than ideal.

Having XP screenshots given that Don's development sys may still be that isn't that much of an issue to me, but yes, there should be at least a sampling of Win 7 shots as well.

The main issue with us providing screenshots is that they need to be based on a clean install and not show any private data so that may be quite hard to accomplish.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

I absolutely agree about the importance of screenshots. Unfortunately this app evolves so fast that it's almost impossible to keep pace... :roll:

Conc. that "lightbox" effect, yes, I really want that too. It's on my list since a while ago. Ah, the time, the time... :|

:lol: Then what I'd suggest is to locate all the screenshots, sort by date/vers and find the oldest one, and update them in that order (maybe try to update at least one a day?) so that over time, they will all get updated...since it's the old ones that are the most likely to give a visitor pause...

Could you let me know:
- what exactly to include in the screen shots;
- what format (.jpg, .png, etc), colour depth and size;
- delivery: posted as attachments in the forum or through e-mail.

2 - what format (.jpg, .png, etc), colour depth and size;
3 - delivery: posted as attachments in the forum or through e-mail.
With pleasure:
1 - you see the screenshots on the webpage; feel free to do updated versions of them; feel free to include what you like; feel free to add new ideas for screenshots, or tell me to drop certain ones (I generally feel I have a little too many screenshots there).
2 - png 24bit has better quality; jpg only if foto material (thumbnails) is part of the screenshot (png is too large then).
3 - e-mail (otherwise we get a discussion over screenshots... :roll: :wink: )
4 - if you like to add short descriptive texts, I won't stop you. :)

thanks!

I'd maybe start with something like the "New Items" since it's 7.40.02 so around TWO years old!

Or...rather..."Views"...it's 6.70.10! How ancient is that? :shock:

Out of curiosity, did you send those screens to Don? I noticed that none yet feature Windows 7, so either none were sent or Don hasn't had time to stick them up there :|

Also, while on the subject of website's images, does anyone like the picture of that woman that replaced "Grass"?

Oh, I should have mentioned it: nas8e9 did send some very good shots only one day later, but I was too picky!! It's a sad truth: nobody can deliver to my standards because I'm on a never-ending ego-trip to... well, the devil knows...

Nope. She looks like a royalty-free girl, waiting for a free beer in a bar. I'd prefer much the blond one that Don brought into discussion when he was considering the relaunch of the site. Thanks the Universe she's around here, so take a closer look into her wonderful eyes and tell me if she's not staring at you with a professional inquiring, xyploring mind... 8)

But aren't less than perfect current shots much better than obsolete ones? I think the former would be to our advantage as old/outdated shots are a REAL turnoff to me...At least as interim until better ones can be created.

I just saw the woman on site...looks way too dated...like a print ad from the 1970's...hope you can find something better...I'd suggest maybe an very old fashioned sailing ship or warship...like from the 1600/1700's when they were 'exploring' the new worlds...that's what a major investment company in USA uses as logo: http://www.vanguard.com

:mrgreen: I'm having a hard time getting that grin out of my face.

The retro-girl (which I like a lot!) is only an interim solution -- I know that the average crowd just does not live up to my aesthetic standards. :wink: I'm working on something more gullible ... I mean, between the massages...

Screenshots: yes, probably. I will talk to my shrink about it.
