Quickest way to clone a file using built-in features?

Post by j_c_hallgren »

I think I posted about something like this ages ago, but finding it now is like 'needle in haystack' so (even though I've been here for years, I still run into some beginner's type issues now and then  ):

When you're in the list and want to just make a copy of the file ('xxxx.txt' => 'xxxx - copy.txt' or "Copy of xxxx.txt" style), how does one do it the easiest/quickest way in XY? Given that std context menu doesn't provide this function...one has to go all the way over to "File">"Duplicate"> to get this option, and right-click on file doesn't have a menu option of "Duplicate' (which I think it should as the 4th item).

Maybe this is more of a wish to have a new item in context menu, as that seems to be ideal, because you don't have to relocate pointer to TB or menubar to access it.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Would a KS assigned to a desired command suffice? No pointer relocation needed

It would for many but my older brain, i tend to only use a few more common KS's as keeping track of which ones to use in which appl is getting too much for me!

That's why I was hoping for a context menu option...right now, I'm using another context menu product ("File menu tools") which has some sub-options including "Duplicate file" but that's much futher down the context menu and the sub-option is also down a ways...

I think Ctrl+D for Duplicate is not that tough to remember. :)

 Wait till you're 54 yrs old before you say that!

I'll see what I can do to keep that in my mind...

BTW, I don't have KS showing on menus to make em smaller so never thought about it being that simple...see what I mean by having basic questions now and then?

Well, what you can do is to use the right-click drag'n'drop context menu:

Just hover over a files, click down the right mouse button, keep it pressed, move a few centimeters (while remaining in the listview) to an empty space, release right mouse button, choose of the many "copy here" options.

8) I like that solution! It's rather easy to do and not difficult to remember, so for us oldsters, that makes it almost ideal! Thanks!

Good to hear that you like it. I always do it that way because it's the way it could be done in Windows Explorer. Only that XY makes it more comfortable ("Copy here as...").

Well.... never thought I could actually give ANY advice here, but:
dragging with Ctrl-LEFT mouse will do it right away, just like copying between panels, or into an explorer window... :P
