Tab folders expanding automatically
Tab folders expanding automatically
The thing I hate most about XYPlorer is that fact that when you change form one tab to another, the second tab always expands the folder structure down to where you were on the first folder. The whole point of having multiple tabls is to keep separate file/folder structures for the different areas of the file system your using, so the last thing I want is for each tab to then expand out to the same folder as the last one. Is there some configuration setting to stop them syncronising????

Use "Lock Tree" perhaps?

Re: Tab folders expanding automatically
Come on, are you all telling my this doesnt drive you mad as well?
Why dosent the tree in each tab stay fixed on the view when you change off and back on to the tab?
I'll describe the problem a little clearer.
tab1 J:\Techwork_Data\DB\Pollution\RDC\ folder in the tree list has the focus, all other drives are collapsed for clarity
tab2 everything collapsed, now select S:\Techworks_Data\Projects\3100\3126\ in the tree list
now switch back to tab1. My previously selected folder (RDC) still has the focus, but its now right at the top of the pane, and S: has been expanded out to my ...3126 folder that i selected in the other tab.
What this means, is every time I change tabs, then go back to a tab, its view has changed. The whole idear of having multiple tabs is to maintain separate views of the file system. Whats the point in that, may as well do your copy/pase in a single tab and scroll up/down.
There is even more inconsistancy with this functionality. Because J: is located above S:, my selected folder in J: moves up to the top of the pane when the focus is returned to this tab from tab2, but my view on tab2 is stable, because there is no other tab with a folder selected on a drive letter after S. Now if I open a third tab and select W:,then go back to tab2, NOW my selected folder has moved to the op of the pane.
Cant we just dump the multiple tabs and give me real duel panes with separate tree lists in each pane?

As far as I remember, when talking about dual tree (long long time ago), I said I would even love a tree per tab...Techworks wrote:Why dosent the tree in each tab stay fixed on the view when you change off and back on to the tab?
As Don didn't seem to like that (or didn't like to code that) he decided that I wouldn't need it - neither per tab nor per pane
Re: Tab folders expanding automatically
When I started getting annoyed by the tree jumping up and down like a yo-yo when I switched between tabs, I started using Lock Tree. You may query the current behaviour with Don, but the tree changing depending on location selected via tab/list is a feature. Those who want the tree to be "steady" use " Lock Tree.

I want the tree to be appropriate.

Re: Tab folders expanding automatically
A per-tab maxi or mini tree is technically possible. However, I have a lot of other things on my list first.PeterH wrote:I don't want the tree to be steady.zer0 wrote:When I started getting annoyed by the tree jumping up and down like a yo-yo when I switched between tabs, I started using Lock Tree. Sounds good -- I'd love to have a tree per tab (both mini and maxi, though if I had to choose, I'd choose mini...)admin wrote:A per-tab maxi or mini tree is technically possible. However, I have a lot of other things on my list first.
Looking forward to all the other good stuff that will come along in the meantime...

Maybe you could make a note to remember this?admin wrote:A per-tab maxi or mini tree is technically possible. However, I have a lot of other things on my list first.
Maybe on the roadmap?
I could be very patient then...
But just for my understanding:
- every tab would have a tree "in background"?
- (every tab on both panes, I think?)
- the tree of the active tab (of active pane) would be shown?
Would it be very hard then to allow display of a second tree for the (active tab in the) inactive pane?
But don't get me wrong: a "tree per tab" would be gold - "dual tree" would be some candy on the gold
Re: Tab folders expanding automatically
Lock Tree doent help as it locks the tree for all tab. But it has helped me to understand the limitations of the tree. There is only one tree thats shared on all tabs, thats why its not stable when switching tabs.
The first "fix" should be for the tree view (which folders are expanded and collapsed, what is the selected folder, and the position of the selected folder) to be remembered for each tab, and that view restored whenever that tab is selected.
That would definatly help make multiple tabs useful, because ar present they are just plain confusing (to me).
Long term...goto have real duel panes with separate trees for each pane, no other option in my view. I've used Powerdesk for years now, and duel panes have it all over multiple tabs...except with a low res monitor. I'll hang in with XYP as all the other features make it worth while
I'll try a little experiment and see if I can use XYP for the next week with just one tab, one tree and duel panes.

Re: Tab folders expanding automatically
What I meant is each tab remembers its own tree (expansions, selection, scroll pos). Just what Techworks describes here as "fix"PeterH wrote:Maybe you could make a note to remember this?admin wrote:A per-tab maxi or mini tree is technically possible. It's the same: what you call "remember" is what I called "in the background". (It's remembered, but cannot be seen...)admin wrote:What I meant is each tab remembers its own tree (expansions, selection, scroll pos). Just what Techworks describes here as "fix": ...
And I would love it!
Reason for my kind of expression was the follow-up question: would it be possible to also display the "remembered" tree of the inactive pane

Yes, sure. A tree is just a couple of bytes. You can already create any (mini) tree you like using the loadtree scripting command.PeterH wrote:It's the same: what you call "remember" is what I called "in the background". We are going circles...admin wrote:Yes, sure. A tree is just a couple of bytes. You can already create any (mini) tree you like using the loadtree scripting command.
Compare:
click a Tab, work
click a Tab, work
click a Tab, work
...
with:
prepare and save some trees
click a Tab, load a tree, work
click a Tab, load another tree, work
click a Tab, load a third tree, work
...
The first variant seems more elegant? And for me it seems more natural...
And OK: as long as you talk about this level, I understand you don't talk about dual tree
