XY 9.10.0010 - UI looks horrible

Post by Mesh »

I just took a look at XY v9.10.0010.

I *quite* dislike the new UI changes. "Segoe UI" is a horrible font, and is considerably more difficult to read than Tahoma. That's aside from the fact that it's just aesthetically displeasing (read: ugly).

That, at least, I was able to change back to Tahoma.

What I *wasn't* able to change back are the changes you made to the default line heights. I *hate* the Win 7 look of having it more spaced out. You don't have as much data per screen, and have more scrolling to do than is really necessary.

If there's an INI change to switch this back, please let me know.

Otherwise, I would ask that you restore Tahoma as the default font, and put the line heights back the way they were. Please. :)

I hate the new look so much that I'm deleting this version and going back to an older one.

I *do* like the new GUI enhancements.

However, the default size of Segoe UI font needs to be 9. This is what it has been increased to by default since Windows Vista to accommodate better layout and readability in languages.

I'm sticking with this version. I have campaigned for Win 7-style improvements for quite a while, so I won't be a hypocrite :P

It's a different font, but I do find it quite readable.

Personally, I quite like the new spacing, particularly in List view.

In all, it takes getting used to but so far I'm not hating it. I can see how making the line height customizable can be useful-to-important.

The row heights for Tree, List, and Catalog are all individually configurable by Ctrl+Shift+Wheel for years...

Yes, I'm aware of it. I first have to try whether this breaks my layout (lables etc.). Because having the tree/list/catalog/address bar at 9 and the rest at 8.25 looks, well, not really bad, but it will raise questions...

I was aware of that procedure for the Catalog pane. But I either didn't know or didn't remember that it applied to other panes as well, since I never needed it for anything else.

Which settings in the INI file correspond to what you changed? I'd rather be able to note the exact values of the older versions of XY so I can set them precisely, rather than eyeballing it.

Put all to -2 pixels and your are back to the old values.

The looks are drastic enough in differences that I think it might warrant a button or menu item somewhere. Obviously, this would have to act as a one time reset, rather than locking the settings in place, so that users can still customize the settings.

But a pair of buttons to restore the UI to XP defaults or Win 7 defaults would be a good approach, I think.

I second this, I prefer the more compact, old layout, specially in the list view

Just tested: Segoe is wider than Tahoma. This makes it unsuitable for my labels. So I will go for labels Tahoma 8, and contents ( tree/list/catalog/address bar) Segoe 9. Looks okay to me

It is saved in the INI automatically like all settings.

If you ever change the font for Labels away from Tahoma, please add the ability to customize Label fonts in the Configuration.

You can already: Font / General.

Whoops! Thanks for pointing that out. I'm not as familiar with these aspect of XY's configuration, because I've never needed to work with them before. Sorry for putting you through the trouble!

The beta you just released lists:

- Default font size for main controls from 8.25 to 9.

Within XY's configuration, in the past, it has locked font sizes for General and Dialogs. Does this apply to the change you made? Or can users change the font size back to 8.25?
