XY and Kaspersky Internet Security 2010

Post by dienbaquan2nd »

Hi there,

I download the beta release frequently, and notice that after applied the update to XYplorer installation folder, when starting up, Kaspersky Internet Security take a scan to the XYplorer.exe process which is quite long (10s).

I think XYplorer should be divided into several modules (files) so that it can't be take disadvantage when a Security application run on the system.

PS: Also, when running with KIS enabled, XYplorer operates slower than when KIS is disabled.

I see the same thing. The good news is that this is a one-time thing: after the initial scan, XYplorer starts up at its usual speed.

As regards to breaking up XYplorer in several files, I don't think that is a realistic request: in my experience only a few security packages would benefit, and given that Kaspersky only causes the delay the first time XYplorer is started, the cost/benefit ratio seems, well, off... :)

Hi and welcome!

This is one the most extreme wishes ever posted here. Congratulations!

The chances are infinitely small that this will happen I'm afraid.

Never mind,
Don

This thread got me curious so I looked on my system and found that XY.exe at 3MB isn't that big at all...as compared to other .exe for installed appl's like Skype at 21M, iTunes at 15MB, Foxit reader at 10MB, etc...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Kaspersky 2010 doesn't so much scan the contents of the file; rather it runs it in a sandbox after unpacking/stripping out/recompiling the code to see how it behaves. I'm guessing that packing/encryption of the file has more to do with the time Kaspersky needs than file size, but what Kaspersky attempts to do with the initial run-scan is allegedly serious propeller head stuff and way out of my league.

Edited to add: Given the above, splitting XYplorer.exe in several files would probably not improve matters since Kaspersky would look at the behaviour of the whole.

I do see the long delay on *initial* run of a new XYplorer version (and also of the install file) as reported by the OP; however, subsequent starts are not affected.

My experience with XYplorer after it has been verified by KIS is it stills slower than when KIS is off; some things like glitches in network connection, it isn't smooth like it does when no KIS.

If splitting is not possible, I think a digital signature on XYplorer.exe and XYCopy.exe sound more reasonable, right? :)

FWIW, Directory Opus is also affected by KIS being active, especially with regard to tree building. I like Kaspersky, but it's not without performance effects. More importantly, this seems to me to be a Kaspersky rather than a XYplorer problem.

It might help with Kaspersky's initial scan time, but not with the diminished performance and glitches you see afterward. As a solution to this particular problem, it's probably not effective.

I'm sorry that the combination of XYplorer and Kaspersky isn't working out for you as well as it should. Apart from the initial scan run time, my experience with this combination is much more positive. Kaspersky's reputation as an effective anti-malware solution is solid, but like all anti-malware its protection comes at a price.

There is a related thread to this -- at least I think it is, http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2016 -- and the solution isn't impossible (and it's free). It involves using OpenSSL and Signtool (from Windows SDK). It just depends on whether Don would find it suitable for his development process.
