Change timestamp of a file?

Post by TsunamiZ »

Anyone know if there is a way to change the timestamp of a file through the XY interface [without using scripting]?

Sure. Select a file, turn on Info Panel and mouseover the dates for created/modified/etc ;)

:? You mean other than http://88.191.26.34/XYwiki/index.php/In ... e-stamping?
You're a veteran here so I'm a bit puzzled by this query...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

Not a veteran, rather a sleeper. But recently he got very awake... reminds me to the story of Godzilla...

I must say, I had the same problem long ago.

Seems the problem is, that these fields don't look as if they can be changed - until you click them. So if you don't know - you will not try.
Maybe they should initially have a white background or so?

I know it's prehistoric. This feature is almost older than the whole app. Want to improve it since long. But prio was always too low.

Yes, this (or something similar) could definitely help! And it's a query that occurs here somewhat on regular basis, because it's not really obvious at all that these fields can be changed...unless you've read some documentation...oh, and I think I may have had same issue myself way back when..

Another idea would be to have some icon thing (like the checkmark/X) appear when not in modify mode that would/could be used to invoke modify (either in addition or in place of clicking on timestamp)?
Even something simple like a "+" or such?

maybe have a pencil icon next to them that can also be clicked to edit. and the other 2 icons can be grayed out until when in edit mode.

Yes, that would be a good solution. But you know, for everybody who knows how it goes it would disturb the GUI with redundant information. I'm fine with keeping this bit to be "discovered".

I think having to "discover" this to be a bad idea...sorry! Having had to answer this question repeatly over the years, adding a small 'pencil' icon that would change to the other two when in edit mode seems a good way to handle it...this icon wouldn't be that large and should help greatly...one could still click on field as before but having a pencil to click on as alternative would be good.

And I'm not saying that the checkbox/X should be grayed, but be only in edit as now with the pencil when not in edit.

My (lo prio) plan is rather to add a separate modal interface for timestamping and remove it completely from the Properties panel.

but the current implementation seems pretty simple and easy to use. its just not obvious to notice by new users. even if you were to add a new modal interface for timestamping, it might be good to still keep the properties feature of doing it for choice. perhaps also make it hotkey-able in the menu. :)

Sometimes I think everybody has to learn this by chance. I don't know if this should be necessary?
Don: maybe you should change your mind?
