I just tested it, and no, it doesn't make any difference. Sometimes XY works properly, but 75% of the time, the freezing issue exists.

Identical experience over here - but ONLY when I moved to Windows 7 32 bit for about 2 weeks (other issues besides this one caused it's demise over here)...and - without changing anything else (network shares, other machines, my own hardware)...I reinstalled Vista 64 SP2...and XY is as fast as it could possibly be...I have not experienced a single glitch since moving back about 10 days ago.Mesh wrote:Windows 7 Ultimate x64. And I'm working off of a drive mapped to a remote share on another workstation in the same domain (running XP). It's the same machine I worked with while my own machine was running XP, and I didn't have this issue.
Under XP they are subfolders of My Documents. Is that different under V/7?Vocalpoint wrote:And to address Admin: I use XY exclusively for ALL file ops. Vista Explorer may get opened one a week to get to "My Pictures", My Videos etc..which begs the question:
Q: How come XY doesn't put these "special" shares on the tree whereas My Documents appears auto magically? Or am I missing a setting somewhere?
Oh yes...totally different. They are all separate folders in V/7 under:admin wrote:Under XP they are subfolders of My Documents. Is that different under V/7?
I don't fully understand yet. C:\Users\*Username* is a real path (this should work of course in XY). But they are shown directly under MyComputer in the V/7 tree? You have a screenshot?Vocalpoint wrote:Oh yes...totally different. They are all separate folders in V/7 under:admin wrote:Under XP they are subfolders of My Documents. Is that different under V/7?
C:\Users\*Username*
If something could be done in XY to facilitate choosing which of these special folders appear in the tree - that would be fab.
It sorta looks like you are half way there with Favorites->Special System Folders...except for the fact that some are missing (dependent upon OS) and there is no way to have them show on the tree....
I guess one could add these locations to the Catalog etc...or as Favorites?
Cheers!

Oh, now that's another thing. I'm aware of win7 libraries. It's on my list. I thought we are talking about "special folders" that are shown right under MyComputer and can be addressed using a short form like "Desktop\stuff\"...Mesh wrote:Vocalpoint wrote:

Actually, no, they're not in the root of the tree in Win 7. They're under "Libraries". It's just that "Libraries" is expanded by default when you use Windows Explorer.
No - I didn't say there were stored under My Computer in Vista/7 explorer. In the screencap - you can see the User folder stands alone and ABOVE My Computer in the tree...expanding it - shows all the other subfolders in there.admin wrote: I don't fully understand yet. Seems that XY is sadly stuck back in the XP paradigm - where My Computer was the top level. In Vista/7 - the DESKTOP is the top level and everything falls under that.
For consistency - you should consider updating your "tree" layout - dependant of course on what OS is in place...a Windows XP user should get the current tree order and those of us choosing Vista/7 should get the default tree "folders" layout from those OS's.
No, also WE XP and every other file manager I've seen has DESKTOP at top level. I deliberately decided in version 1.0 of XYplorer (then called "Tracker") that I prefer My Computer on top, and up to now (> 10 years later) I've heard little complaints...Vocalpoint wrote:No - I didn't say there were stored under My Computer in Vista/7 explorer. I will see what I can do about this user folder... the question is what will happen under XP where this is not an expected folder in that place... I don't want to import any Vista stuff into XP contexts.
Generally I believe that I do not necessarily have to mirror the proliferation of special folders in recent Windows, which is an abstraction of MS over NTFS meant to attract a new class of customers, in my file manager.
Oh yes, device browsing is on my list!Mesh wrote:admin wrote:

I agree, with certain exceptions - like device browsing, which was mentioned earlier. The idea is to not need Windows Explorer for anything, at least for me.
Not complaining - just asking if I can "see" the tree in XY - the same way as the rest of the world sees it in Explorer (be it Vista, XP or whatever) . You have to agree that millions of us - after years of use of constant usage - are programmed to see the "tree" concept in a specific way. That you deliberately "decided" to move My Computer to the top is one of the reasons we are now talking about it...if XY is to truly become the defacto standard and COMPLETE replacement for Explorer - it should at least offer the option to display the tree (and requisite elements) with a solid nod to the original, standard element positioning - IF and only IF the user desires that.admin wrote:No, also WE XP and every other file manager I've seen has DESKTOP at top level. Thanks! Appreciate the effort....admin wrote: I will see what I can do about this user folder... the question is what will happen under XP where this is not an expected folder in that place... I don't want to import any Vista stuff into XP contexts.
However - some may just love the fact that XY "mirrors" the major traits (not all of them of course) of Explorer - just for that feeling of "Hey - this thing has all my stuff where I expect to see it - AND it does all this other cool stuff!" And of course - if XY does it all and looks the part - my requirement for never having to deal with Explorer is done.admin wrote: Generally I believe that I do not necessarily have to mirror the proliferation of special folders in recent Windows, which is an abstraction of MS over NTFS meant to attract a new class of customers, in my file manager.
