Considering to buy XYplorer, but have two questions

Yes, and also take care that Cache thumbnails on disk is enabled. That way you have to wait only one time for each folder, and after that it's lightning fast forever.

I think it's a misconception that creating all thumbnails at once will make browsing a file list in thumbs node any faster. Creating thumbnails takes time, and this won't make the process any faster. It only concentrates your waiting time into one block, instead of having it distributed over the scrolling.
Actually I changed it from "all at once" to how it is done now because it was consensus among users that "all at once" was hindering fluent browsing.

The good solution of course would be having it done in a background thread. This is on my list.

That is true, but obviously only if the folders contents remain somewhat stable...if a very large nbr of new pix are added to a folder, it will take a bit to add them to the cache but any existing ones will be very fast.

If you dump 300 new pix into a folder with 100 pix in cache, it'll be slow while they also get cached but then resume its speed again the next time.

If you open a folder where NOT FOR ALL files the thumbnails have already been generated, then, instead of generating them for all files at once, XYplorer will only generate the thumbnails for a file as soon as you scroll over it. That is very annoying if you have a large photo collection and want to find a certain image by scrolling through the thumbnails.

BTW, I soon will add a new keywords feature (under the label "tags") where you can attribute tags (eg: 2009, India, Mumbai, Night, Chaos) to your files by which you then can search the files. Ideal for a large photo collection...

Exactly, and I already have a very large photo collection, so in order to get fast browsing I would have to scroll through all of them once until all the thumbs get cached... just opening a folder once and getting a coffee while it's caching would be preferable to me.

1. Never seen this. Can you reproduce it?
2. Scaled. But looks good here. Please ensure that your screen color depth is 32bit.

When I open a folder in that detail-with-thumbnail view, the surplus icons are all there. The one in the column header will always stay there. But I can make the other ones go away by
- Scrolling to the very bottom of the folder. The surplus icons in the list will still be there.
- But in the very moment when I start scrolling back towards the top, they will disappear.

Also, as I just noticed, these surplus icons (both in the header and in the list) will only appear when the "show icon on thumbnail" option is enabled.

Finally, when a thumbnail has not yet been generated, the surplus icon for that one file is not there. But after the generation of the thumbnail it will appear.

So for the time being I just switched off "show icon on thumbnail".

2. I attached an image; don't know if that's the way it is supposed to look. I have 32-bit color depth.

Please check whether you use the correct gdiplus.dll on Windows 2000. This is just a hunch.

It's not just you who's came across this issue. I've just enabled 'Classic' mode on my Win 7 and those icons are shown like yours. However, in the Tree they are shown as normal.

2. You are using windows classic theme. What do you expect?

I just assumed Windows 2000 according to your screen shots showing the old-fashioned interface.
Please forget about this. Programs on Windows 7 ought to have no GDI problems.

2. Maybe simply displaying 16*16 icons would solve the problem. Also applies to several other menus in XYplorer that don't display 16*16 but something scaled. The Send-To menu looks perfect (maybe because it is displaying 16*16).

2. Not possible, icon size here is controlled by menu height. You might be able to alter this height in general system display settings.
