  • auto-refreshing of the tree in a way that works reliably under all circumstances and for all types of removable storage
  • support for all types of icon overlays
  • auto-refreshing of dynamically-updated icon overlays
  • tray icon to come back after shell restarts
  • breadbrumb support in address bar
  • libraries and favorites ala Windows Explorer in Windows 7
  • separate processes for tabs (in order that XYplorer not freeze up when waiting for something to happen in one tab)
  • ability to execute files by double-clicking them in the catalog, rather than just browsing to them
Well the last one is easy: In the properties dialog of the catalog item select "Open item" instead of "Go to location", then you'll even save one click, because that way the command is fired with a single click...

The big one from me is getting rid of with windows management of copying files and folders, its such a pain in windows7.

Having each tab a process sounds interesting and fast, especially for us multi-core people :) Also the breadcrumb support is something I did really like in opus.

Those should be covered by 'Win 7 stuff' that's on the roadmap and in a poll. I hope you voted for that option, considering you want the functionality ;)

Just wondering...Why was this a separate thread? Since some of this is already covered in http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=4382
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

FYI: To make sure I keep current on threads, I use the "View active topics" so that way I see any thread in any forum...helps avoid duplicate threads....and I don't disagree with your ideas...ust felt some were redundant with the poll topics...

Yes! Definitely two thumbs up here! Some of my tabs are pointing at external HDDs, which spin down if inactive for a period of time. Often, simply selecting a tab with one of those drives forces a wakeup (shouldn't really, but that's another matter), which results in inability to use XYplorer for the period of about 5-10 seconds. Having separate threads for tabs will prevent this from happening and improve XYplorer's performance substantially 8)

First and foremost I wish for XYplorer to sell many more copies in 2010 and then,I know this will not happen, I would like XYplorer to have a totally new GIU. I think the current one is perfectly adequate but does not have the wow factor to encourage new sales. I am sure Don would much prefer to go for the new features as changing the look of something is boring from a programming pov. The way in which I see the GUI changing is basically along the lines of information presented only as needed based on the actions you take. For example an altered info panel would be a good candiate to 'activate' for items you normally have to right click to see options thus when you select a menu item a revised info panel would present all the available options and sub options as there is now more area to display these. When not needed the panel would hide away. Whilst changes of this type do not alter the functionality they do make it look and feel more modern. As another example, I heard in many reviews that windows explorer in win7 was even worse but I find it very much better for 'run of the mill' tasks - not in the XY league but it does meet the needs of certain users very well.

Actually everytime I see screenshots from Mac apps I start fantasizing about a totally new GUI. No more Windows themes at all but totally radically free. But then my personal taste often enough proved to be crowd-incompatible, so I quickly forget about it.

And those apps that look like Mac ones are my personal least favorites! :P
I have a Windows sys and I expect it to look like that...if I ever wanted a Mac/Apple look, I'd have bought into that style but so far, and most likely, that will never ever happen.

I no not what Mac Apps even look like so can't either agree or disagree with Don's fantasies or JC dislikes! What I was suggesting is, in fact, totally based around Windows sytems. Win 7 and newer applications are subtly changing the GUI - strange at first but superior with use. Win 7 Areo Peek, Jump Lists, larger icons that don’t look patronising make the user experience slik and friendly. Now, I am fortunate now having a fast system (i860 and 6GB memory) but this is the future so time to experience it and exploit it. I can recall developing, as part of a small team, a complete OS running in less than 5kB on system 1500 (pre PC era) all written in machine code with no GUI - it was fast, efficient and inevitably short lived. The future trend of hardware costs/performance is unlikely to change and the look and feel of software applications is what sells to users who, unlike me, have no appreciation of yestrdays computers.
Funny how change is so hard to bring about but change is fact and unstoppable.
