7-Zip

Post by blewis999 »

I thought I saw some place that 7-Zip will not work with XYplorer context menus, is that true? I can see 7-Zip from XYplorers context menu in a win 32 xp virtual machine running in Vista 64. But I cannot see 7-Zip from the context menu on a Vista-64 machine. But I can see 7-Zip in other 3rd party file managers.

The reason I am mentioning this is that I don't know if there is a solution to this, or whether this is a known limitation under Vista 64. If it is a limitation, I can live with it, XYplorer adds much more than this minor issue. I wish I had found this program long ago.

Thank you for any advice in advance.

Robert

What are we going to do?
How much more obvious can we/Don make this? Yet it keeps getting posted here quite freqently under all sorts of titles...

Maybe make a "sticky" post in this (and bug) forum pointing to http://www.xyplorer.com/faq.htm and saying something like: Before you start a new thread, does this answer your query?
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Yep, sticky would be step 1. Also, some form of moderation has to take place. I noticed that our forum members count increased significantly during November (it's not even over yet), unlike in the previous months. That's great, it really is, but if forum user quantity is/will be proportional to threads like this (no blame for OP) then our intent on keeping the forum clean will suffer a setback.

Perhaps our helpfulness is easily taken advantage of, because people know that they will get an answer that's pretty much spot on quite rapidly. Awesome, we've got eXYperts (see what I did there? ) to respond to queries, but that takes the incentive out of searching yourself, sadly...

Maybe a sticky in this sub-forum pointing to this (http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2617) thead which then links to actual? So that the thread in TTQ&A would be a locked sticky pointer only and we'd thus just update that one FAQ thread as needed.

I don't see that we need moderation...just better "in-your-face" (if you will) things to hopefully get attention of new users here...agree that this is not to reflect negatively on the original poster here but users should do some minimal searching first, I would hope!

Sure, but that's a reactive measure, not a proactive one. I don't know if it's possible but it'd be good to classify a post when making it, so if it's a question and a person tries to submit it he/she gets redirected to FAQ first and only when clicking 'No, no answer here' his/her post is posted to forum.

Getting attention won't stop 1-reply threads being created. More users = more posts and will Don have the time to look through them all while incorporating his daily 10-hour coding sessions? Some sort of sifting out would be good, but it's up to Don how to handle it.

Since I posted the question which has generated the usual... "Read the FAQ" replies. I will update my post.

I did read through the FAQ's, this program is new to me and a lot of what others think is common knowledge is not common to someone that is trying to remember an new set of interfaces.

If you want to improve the forum and reduce the reposted questions, I would suggest incorporating the google search API's into the FAQ database. This would allow searching by more than one word; example: "is there a FAQ on zip context menus for XYplorer".

Just so you know...my replies weren't meant to be critical of you specifically, but it was that I'd just so recently seen a similar thread that I was wondering what we might easily do to try and help out new users such as yourself to locate the needed info...when a similar thread hasn't appeared for a few weeks or so, it's not quite that convenient to locate it if you're new (or sometimes even for us to find either!) but when it's been just a week or so, even manually paging back thru some prior posts might have located it.

And based on some of these similar threads, Don has added some more info to the FAQ on the site in addition to the forum so that makes it both easier and harder...easy in that it should be able to be located quickly -but- harder in that it's not findable via a forum search...that's why having a thread that points back to XY site may help.

Just out of curiosity, if you did read through FAQs, here and on the main site, how come you didn't pick up the answer to your question from them? Were the answers to FAQs somewhat ambiguous, which lead you to not be sure if that's what you were seeking?

The FAQ's are good, and clear, when I went back and found them. I saw the 7-zip post and for some reason couldn't find it again. I might have been misremembered where I first saw the information as was looking in the wrong place. I know I read several times through the documenation. So mostly human error on my side and looking at it too late when I wasn't thinking clearly.

I understand the concern about wasting everyones time, but I still think that the search should have the goodle api, then it would be irrelavent where the information was located. There is another system 'Copernic Search' that I use for legal documents on my system. It indexs everything and allows regular expressions; I have found content in pdfs, programing files, emails and web histories with this. But I don't know if it could be utilized for a web based interface. I think Google has the same functionality but I have not personally used the api's. Just a suggestion.
