Tab scrolling and a little more

Post by zer0 »

I hope that I won't end up getting the proverbial foot out of my mouth  if I say that most XYplorer users are those who read from left to right and scroll down to view additional pages in a document. I hope that we can agree on this, so I shall proceed... 8)

The way Tab mouse-wheel scrolling works in XYplorer is quite unorthodox. To move to a tab to the right of my current one, I have to scroll the wheel up and to move to the left I need to move the wheel down. Let's take a couple of other apps for comparison: Office 2007 (its Ribbon UI, to be specific) and Mozilla Firefox. Tab scrolling behaviour in both of those is exactly the opposite: to the right on down and to the left on up. One cannot help but believe that it's the de facto standard. Therefore, I'd like to see either a tweak or an option to reverse the tab movement. There is a related thread where a person asked about adding arrows for shifting tab line left and right: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3637

The next Tab-wish has more than just Ribbon UI and Firefox behaviour for backup, it has a law! :P It's called Fitts's Law (more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitts%27s_law) and tabs in Ribbon UI and Firefox follow an interpretation of this law. If you've scrolled to the left-most tab (in Ribbon or FF), then no matter how much extra upwards scrolling you do the position won't change. That's why menu bar in Mac OS is so great: it has effectively infinite height, so users can "throw" their mouse cursor upwards knowing that it won't overshoot that menu bar. It is so great that Apple have copyright and patent rights over this menu bar  Back to XY tabs...currently, continuously scrolling cycles through the tabs over and over. There is no same "assurance" as with Ribbon UI, Firefox and Mac OS that only the left- or right-most tab will be selected. That is what I'd like to change. Either through a tweak or a tickbox in Config\Tabs, called something like "Recycle through Tabs" (enabled to preserve current behaviour, disabled to stop recycling).

So that concludes it :D I hope that you, Don, and others will see the desire for XY's tab behaviour to be more standardised, more in line with what's commonly expected and to improve human computer interaction. Fingers crossed that you'll pick up this tab

Very good. I agree with both points (and am flat shocked about the first one -- I never use the wheel for my tabs so I did not note (ok, I programmed it  ) , but why didn't anybody complain earlier???).
Not sure about the caption "Recycle through Tabs". There might be a better (more standard  ) wording...

Well, I'm not shocked anymore: It's a pretty new bug! This stuff reversed direction only after my high-res wheel fix...

Indeed, sir! We're back to standard :)

Could not find a standard wording, probably because in the Ribbon it's not optional and and digging in FF's about:config didn't produce anything close. How about "Disable tab scroll-through"? On this occasion I can think of a better tool tip message than of the caption ;)

I personally would be fine with just changing the default... the easy solution.

Well if you don't mind having different default actions for cycling by hotkey and cycling by wheel then I'd say when the wheel is used it should stop at the end of the tab bar, but it's extremely useful to wrap around the ends when using the hotkey and I'd say it's even expected.

If you want them both to have the same behavior then an option that refers to it as "Wrap when cycling" would be appropriate.

Hi again,
1)I'd very much appreciate such an option. Its kinda hard and a bit confusing if I cycle tabs with mouse wheel, that it does not stop at the end. Adding this as an option would be nice, as somebody else might like the current behaviour.

2)I asked that again months ago, and there where other solutions - I would like to change the default hotkey assignment for CTRL-mousewheel Up /Down (currently assigned to text size)to cycling through tabs. But I found no way to do so..
Can I adjust that?

Hi,

2) hmm, I know it's there. I just can't find a way to map "MOUSEWHEEL UP" + CTRL to that. How do I write it in the field?

Oh, sorry, I did speed-reading  No, that's not possible. The wheel stuff is all hard-coded.

Well  , then...

mhh, as I think about it, I guess it is hard-coded by yourself?
when you visit northern germany next time, how about I spend you a beer?

Which puts a nice idea into my head: bed and breakfast in exchange for a lifetime license. So I could travel the world by customer-hopping. I have to think about that...

hehe

For a lifetime license I won't support that idea  . but for lifetime support or individual coding.. well that does sound legitimate :D
on the other hand - that's what u also do right now, isn't it?

well anyhow, have a nice world tour then..
