No background image capability yet?!
This is a must. I must have this ability. The folders are boring with plain white. There should be a way to do this.

Since you're new to the forums, may I suggest that you retune your approach when it comes to posting things you'd like to see.DorothyFan1 wrote:This is a must. I must have this ability. The folders are boring with plain white. There should be a way to do this.
The way you came across, and this is just a personal impression, is quite dismissive and deterministic. Please don't think of just yourself when it comes to reaping the benefits of a feature. In my opinion, the background of the list pane is absolutely fine. In fact, I'm quite (so <100%) certain that no other file manager offers an ability to change the background of the panes. From experience, it would help your case if several people expressed their interest in the functionality that you'd like introduced. I'm not speaking for Don, but my impression has always been that he is more concerned with XY's performance than aesthetics.
Overall, you didn't really put a good case forward and since it's more to do with looks than making an application perform better I am not very optimistic about your wish.

Re: No background image capability yet?!
My apologies if my post seems dismissive. I didn't mean it to sound this way. I'll be careful the next time.
Another, perhaps more important feature...and this is something that does concern me is the reliance on the Windows source code for copy/move operations. I know this would be a huge job...but I think this is a workable one.
I think serious consideration should be put into having XYplorer be self reliant on copy move operations as to not depend on the Windows API. This is probably something not many people may care about as well...but I think it's something to consider.

You'd probably have more supporters on convincing Don to ditch the shell operations than the background images.
It's not a replacement for background images, but you can have XYplorer apply the boxed colors to the list background as well as the tree. (Config -> Interface Colors -> Apply box colors to list)
As for the shell ops, I do believe Don eventually wants to offer his own methods if only to avoid the issues in Vista and possibly Windows 7, but it may not be high on the roadmap.

The Windows API issue for copy move operations is actually something I think should be given high priority. I believe the Windows API code for copy/move is getting long in the tooth and needs a serious revamp.TheQwerty wrote:You'd probably have more supporters on convincing Don to ditch the shell operations than the background images.

Yes, I'm aware of the problems with the Vista code base and I'm beginning to believe this is still an issue for Windows 7 since Microsoft has stated Vista and 7 share the same code kernel. Microsoft was supposed to deal with this problem with the release of a new kind of underlying file system but so far this has been pushed down the road.
Stuff like this can't be put off forever...plus I do have a concern about Windows 7 support. I have no plans to upgrade to Win 7 as I hope the XP code base will still be respected even if XPplorer does encorporate Win 7's various desktop improvements. If XYplorer does split with the release of Win 7...meaning it'll forsake the XP camp in order to obey fidelity with Win 7 then I'll have no choice but to drop XYplorer until I get a computer upgrade.
In the meantime...XYplorer is very good. Almost as good as Directory Opus.

As per this poll: http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3234 the user community does not feel that shell file copy/move operations are the no.1 priority. They are close to the top though. Of course, it will be up to Don to decide what he implements and in which order. The Windows API issue for copy move operations is actually something I think should be given high priority. As per this poll http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2919 Windows XP is the leading platform on which users are running XYplorer. Of course, a software product must make the most of the environment that it is in, but I believe XYplorer will be good friends with XP for many a year. As a footnote, I also feel that because Windows 7 has now gone RTM it's important to incorporate it into the testing process to make sure things work on it just as well as they do on other operating systems.Stuff like this can't be put off forever...plus I do have a concern about Windows 7 support.
