Single-pane mode
Single-pane mode
I understand that certain UI elements need to be adjusted to accommodate a dual-pane environment, but the toolbar placement, for example, is horrible (IMO) for a single-pane display (having that short toolbar on the same row as the tabs is nothing short of brilliant
). As someone who doesn't like and will never use the dual-pane feature, I would like to have a mode that makes no accommodations for (and disables) a dual-pane environment. Alternately, dual-pane users would have their own mode that fully accommodates them as well. It would bring the best for everyone and there would be no need for compromise.

I won't presume to speak for Don but there were certain items that had to be adjusted and for which there really can't be a choice as I understand it...Yes, change is difficult I know but it's really not that bad, is it?
And remember that there still might be some more adjustments in the future so don't give up yet!

Re: Single-pane mode
I'm slightly surprised by the demand for the old layout. As I said in another thread I will see whether I can bring it back in form of an optional "Wide Tab Bar" setting...

Re: Single-pane mode
I can definitely see how it's useful for some people, but I find myself switching between several tabs. This is why I never liked Commander-style file managers and absolutely love tabbed file managers. I went through many file managers before I found XYplorer, and I love the tabs. Whenever I used a dual-pane FM, I rarely ever moved thing between the two panes and basically treated them like two completely unrelated directories.j_c_hallgren wrote:Bahamut wrote: As someone who doesn't like and will never use the dual-pane feature,You know that Don said just about the same thing a few yrs ago, and now he's even admitted to using it on occasion, so before you discount it totally, try it in dual single-pane mode and see how much benefit it can be for some situations.
Sounds interesting. Thanks for the quick response.admin wrote:I'm slightly surprised by the demand for the old layout. As I said in another thread I will see whether I can bring it back in form of an optional "Wide Tab Bar" setting...

Re: Single-pane mode
Just curious...have you tried the dual single-pane mode yet? Where you have, in effect, tab set "1" and set "2" but only one set is showing at any time? It's somewhat the best of both worlds...like you could have a set "1" for project A and set "2" for project B and you see either A or B but not both.Bahamut wrote: can definitely see how it's useful for some people, but I find myself switching between several tabs. XY v8 was the first version I did not immediately download after it was released.
XY is the master of SP, but is now also the junior of DP, and IMO there will have to be several releases before its DP mode is at the same level of sophistication as its SP mode.
I try to use only best-of-breed, and on the rare occasion when I need DP, I break out something like TC.
Please provide mechanism for keeping XY interface as if DP functionality never existed, thanks.
Re: Single-pane mode
Sorry, I would like to add example pls.
I use Avira antivirus.
Sometime ago they came out with a security suite, but I kept using the antivirus since already have a firewall that I like very much.
I don't care that I will miss some of the power and ease of use that this integration can provide, plus I am not sure if I subscribe to the belief that just because they make a great antivirus they will automatically make a great firewall.
Thankfully Avira did not drop the standalone antivirus and assume everyone wants to use security suite.
I think the least developer can do for lifetime license holders who liked and bought XY because of its focus, is to ensure no concessions are given to the DP interface at the expense of the SP interface, which I feel is not unreasonable request since the product that XY was billed as replacing is still in fact a SP software.
Thanks.

Re: Single-pane mode
Wondering...which of the few changes made to layout are the most important to you to have back the "old way"? Could you provide a list in order of priority? I'm presuming that having tabs extend over the tree might be the first?Uagadugu wrote:Please provide mechanism for keeping XY interface as if DP functionality never existed, thanks.
Because I can't recall any other major changes to layout...

Re: Single-pane mode
Since I am a chap who is sticking to SP, I feel that I should chirp in with a thought or two.
For the time being, the layout that I have (Toolbar & Address Bar) will suffice. However, once Custom Toolbar Buttons (CTB) will arrive, I would want to swap TB and AB the other way around. I'd also like to see AB have a manual resizing capability. This is so I can resize its length to be in line with the Tree/List divider and the TB buttons will be right above the list, because I'd want to create lots of buttons for my files' scripts to reduce current keys to no more than one script per KS.

Re: Single-pane mode
Well, I haven't been much around lately (or more precisely, active, but I kept an eye on the forums, I can't help myself
) and I'm sorry about that, but I had to deal with a few things I didn't plan on... Still, let me add my opinion on this one.
And not just because I mentioned that already before, and you know I'm always right!

But I have nothing against it I guess, except that there is a reason (other than me being late in the XY department lately
) I'm still using an old pre-DP beta myself. The way I see things, switching to the new beta will mean that I will have to "lose" things. And that is, yes, because of that "new" layout.
I know a few things have been added along the way that I would be interested in, I've also heard of a coming <source> param for report (hola, Don!) that sounds quite exciting, and yet even with all that I can't get myself to upgrade. I know I might sound crazy, but here's why I hate this new layout.
I love my pixels, and always try to save them. I like to have the most info possible visible on screen, and when I say that, I don't mean shit I don't care about, I don't need to be told the date or even the time (I got the taskbar clock for that), my keyboard already tells me whether or not I have caplock or numpad on, no I do mean info I actually do want/need. That's also why I chose carefully what I add in my TB: each button eats my Tabs, and so that should only happen if there's a reason for it. (Plus, I don't want buttons I'd never use/forget why they're here.)
If I upgrade to this new layout :
- With only 9 buttons on my TB on a maximized window (1440x900), I would have an unbelievable amount of wasted space just lost, and I can't stand that. No way. Adding the AB means nothing to me, because I don't use/need it, so that or pictures of flowers and butterflies, same deal, it's wasted space to me. There's already the menubar, that's more than enough already.
Now I could just remove my TB, after all I'm already "hacking" into XY to add some stuff on that long and otherwise quite empty menubar, but the problem is that I need all those buttons, I use them everyday, a lot, and many also act as visual indicator (VF, Hide Folders, Suspend AR, etc) so I can't replace them.
So either I have to lose my oh-so-beloved TB, or deal with a full (almost) row of nothing!
- Not only that, but I'm also losing more : not only is my List smaller (unless I remove my TB to "compensate," which I don't wanna do), but my Tabs are, too. They had almost my whole screen to show info, now we have to remove the size of my Tree/Catalog, which is somewhat large (as I don't want to have any horizontal scrolling there, another reason I'd love a 2-column Catalog, but that's another topic)
Right now, I know I will not get ride of my TB, and I really don't want to want to lose as much as I've described. And I just can't see myself not having Tabs showing at all either (Although, oddly enough, I have to say that is the option I would consider before any other).
I know, it might all sound silly/crazy to (some of) you, but guess what: I'm running XY 7.90.0254 right now, have been for a while, and I will only update if someone can provide me a file for 0261 (the last pre-DP/new layout), or when new beta will have that "Wide Tab Bar" option.
So yeah, it's easy to see how it wouldn't bother people who use AB or don't use TB/Tabs I guess, but I'm surprised you thought people who don't wouldn't be bothered by all this wasted space, and the lost of information just to gain nothing.
Okay, I'm done, sorry for the overlong rant. Back to silence

Alright, so color me surprised you were surprised....admin wrote:I'm slightly surprised by the demand for the old layout. As I said in another thread I will see whether I can bring it back in form of an optional "Wide Tab Bar" setting...
You see, I might have not followed the while DP thing, and I am one of the few who do not care for DP and while I wouldn't say I will never use it (never say never), I'm 100% sure than at least 99.99% of the time, I won't be using it. It just doesn't go with my workflow and the way I do things.admin wrote:(2) Even if you don't use Dual Pane you will benefit from it because it brought along a general "clean up" of the code, which made XY (for you) faster and (for me) easier to maintain.

So you want

TREE | LIST
or
TOOLBAR | TAB TAB TAB...
TREE | LIST
Is that what the other posters here miss as well??

Yes, exactly. That one with the TB on the right is the one I use, but I'm sure others have it on the left indeed. (And of course, TREE means Tree with Catalog on top of itadmin wrote:So you want

Re: Single-pane mode
Something that I was quite indifferent to when Vista first launched I have now come to like quite a lot, and that's the behaviour of more and more programs hiding the menu bar. Many windows native apps and Safari 4) in Vista and Windows 7 hide the menu bar to have it appear when you press ALT. Chrome simply has all the "menus" it need in two toolbar buttons. Both of these I like a lot as a way of getting rid of some wasted space. I've even put all of my menus into a toolbar button and hidden the MB in Firefox with the TinyMenu extension.
FWIW I like having the catalogue/tree the full height and almost never use the buttons, so don't lose the current layout either thanks
