7 Zip does register itself - it shows in the Windows Explorer and Directory Opus right-click menus. So why wouldn't it show in XYPlorer's right-click menu?

And also, if we're talking about right-click on files/folders, make sure you do NOT have option "Default items only in shell context menu" enabled, on Configuration - Advanced.

The right click menu I'm referring to is the context menu that pops up when you right-click on a filename.

No, I do not have "Default items only in shell context menu" checked.

BTW, I decided to try a different zip manager so I uninstalled 7-Zip and installed PKZip. It doesn't show in any of the right-click menus: Windows Explorer, Directory Opus or XYPlorer. So it may be an x64 issue that I have to live with. But, it is odd that 7-Zip shows up in the other 2 and not XYPlorer.

Anyway, I'll probably go back to 7-Zip since it is free.

I also do not get the context menu for x64 7-zip showing up in XYplorer under Vista x64 It shows up just fine in WE, so even if it's doing things a little differently to other programs such as QuickPar and Beyond Compare 2 (both show up in WE and XY) it would be good to get a fix.

Having read this thread, I am under the impression that opinions are kind of split on the matter. Therefore, I'd like to voice my support for being able to view them in XYplorer. It's definitely possible to do so in Windows Explorer (Vista). However, the way they've implemented it isn't great. In WE, Zip files actually form part of a tree, so if you have dozens of them in a folder then your tree will be longer than the Chinese Great Wall I can't think of a better way right now, but surely there has to be one

I made sure that option you mentioned (Jackie) was turned off and here's the result:

The thing is that XY is a 32-bit application, so if a program installs only 64-bit shell extensions they will not show up in XY (I'm not sure that's what's the cause of your issue with itmes missing from the context menu in XY, but it's a possibility). A 64-bit application that installs shell extensions should also install the 32-bit versions, but this is sometimes not done. Often this can be fixed by simply installing the 32-bit version of the application 'side-by-side' with the 64-bit version.

Also, you can quickly check and see if it's missing 32-bit extensions by starting the 32-bit version of Windows Explorer and see how the context menus behave there. Actually, maybe it's not so quick - there are a few hoops to jump through to get the 32-bit WE to run (but you only have to do this once). See here:

Kidding! I guess I should go and hassle all the programs that don't show up - still, it does limit XY's usefulness on a 64bit system, and if you want more than 3.5GB RAM (anyone who does either serious gaming or more likely, serious work!) then you're going to be running on a 64bit OS.

Is it possible for a 32bit program to read these 64bit shell extensions? And thanks for the info mwb1100 - that trick doesn't seem to work for me on Windows 7 RC1, but it makes sense as a reason at least.
