Special Folder Support (especially in Vista)

Post by soja »

I would like to see more support for Special Folders.

Specifically, I would like to be able to choose which Special Folders are shown in the tree.

For example, right now, I can choose Documents. However, Vista has support for more special folders, like Downloads, Music, and %userprofile%, which these are all in. (In Vista, these folders aren't in the Documents folder anymore--they are one folder up, in the %userprofile% folder.) Consequently, when I visit any of my user folders besides Documents, I have to navigate to C:\users\<username> first. I suppose I could use a shortcut, but Tree navigation is also very important to me. It's so much easier to just go to one of the root nodes in the tree instead of scrolling up and down because the tree is expanded to %userprofile%.

Actually I plan to give this totally in the user's hand. You will decide which folders are shown at top level and how they are called. But this will be after Dual Pane.

Hey, that sounds ideal! Thanks for the consideration.

FWIW, I have all of my Vista User Folders (including Documents) at the top level of the Catalog. Works great. And as for the "expanded tree", I also put all of my User Folders on a separate drive with my User Name Folder at the root level. So the tree only expands one level when I select the User Folders in the Catalog.

Did you try the new MiniTree yet? With the Catalog set up like this you are ready to go for the jackpot.

So far (as of 10 minutes ago) I really like the Mini Tree. Clean. Efficient.

But, I haven't yet discovered how to quickly and efficiently expand specific branches, yet keep the rest of the tree "mini".

For example, my Media drive has folders for my current video projects. If the list shows the files in one of my project folders, then only the path to those files is shown in mini tree. Next, I decide that I want to see the full list of project folders in the tree.

1. If I uncheck View | Mini Tree, then all folders in all drives become visible/available. But I lose the mini tree. I'm back to the old behavior.

2. If I use the Expansion command to fully expand the parent folder/drive for the current list view, then I get all folders and subfolders on that drive in the tree. I don't want all of them. That's worse than deselecting mini tree.

3. I can double-click to get up one level and then double-click the next folder and then repeat until I have added each of the project folders to the mini tree, but that is tedious and a waste of effort.

What I really need is an Expansion command that expands the selected tree item one level only. That would give me a decent choice between not having to turn off mini tree and not having to fully expand the selected branch.

Is there a way to do what I want built-in already and I've just missed it? If not, then this would make a nice feature request.

Shift+F4 will show all childs of a folder in Mini Tree.

Shift+F4 does what I need initially. And if things get too cluttered in the tree, Pressing Shift+M (my custom shortcut to Mini Tree) twice to toggle MT off and then on again cleans things up quite nicely.

Well done, Don. The Mini Tree is really a great feature.

You bet! :D

Here's a hot tip in form of a screenshot for how to use the Catalog plus a minimal Scripting to have a one-click tree (in case you are like me and need the same tree most of the time):
To see the attached files, you need to log into the forum.

What is the syntax and what are the arguments for loadtree? It's not in the Wiki and I can't get program help in Vista 64.

Don,

You may want to post any corrections for me and other curious users, but what I discovered from various threads is that the command is:

::loadtree "[any valid plain text path] [common names like Computer, Network, etc]"

The | character is the required separator between items.

I'm sure I missed some other options for arguments, but the ones I did list work for me.

Yes, correct.

It's in the help file (Scripting Command, loadtree)! :)

As I said before in my earlier post - I'm on Vista 64 and can't get to the help file because, as Vista says, "...is not supported in Windows Vista."

Having html-based help or a searchable and bookmarked .pdf help file would "help", as would making the existing help file function in Vista. I saw the Help thread and voted, but until the current help file is updated/changed/converted, I'm stuck with only the Wiki and my awesome searching skills should I need program help.

-Jeff

PS - The Wiki is awesome, too. It's just not current. :)

Oh, I wished I could "help", but only thinking of the topic makes me sick. For me personally it's one of the big mysteries of the computer age, why help software generally sucks, even if it's ridiculously overpriced.

So...doesn't the "fix" as suggested on site FAQ (http://www.xyplorer.com/faq.htm) page under 'Issues' work for you? (See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82148) I'm not a Vista guy but that page says it's valid for V-64 as I read it.
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.
