Ok, yesterday I uninstalled AlZip because it wouldn't unzip into Tracker and installed TugZip. I swear TugZip was able to extract files into Tracker, but with today's new version (0192) it won't. I get the "no drop" icon. I see that you modified the cursor with regard to the Ctrl and Shift keys...did you do anything that would change a regular drop? Or am I mistaken and TugZip didn't actually work yesterday?

AlZip, TugZip ... arggh, can't you just give good old WinZip some bucks for a nag-free version?

I mean there are zillions of zip-uitlities out there, I just cannot install all of them to see what's their problem. But ok, I suppose they all do work with Explorer, so maybe it's just one little twist...

Which shall I try, AlZip or TugZip?

I prefer AlZip.

Hey, maybe if you fix one of these "zillions of zip-utilities", it will fix them all?? Maybe it's actually WinZip and WinRar that are non-standard.

I tried to download it, but the downloading was too slow for my nerves. So I aborted it and tried another idea I got while waiting for AlZip's landing.

Does it work by any chance? (latest BETA)

Winrar Temporary Files not temoved

Post by nony »

Long discussion has been done already. But is it really fixed or what?

When I drag Drop files from Winrar to XY, the temporary files made by winrar are copied instead of moving. In explorer it behaves as expected.

Well, yes. Upon DnDing, you're invoking an extraction operation, so it's no surprise that file(s) is(are) copied. It's not a function of XY to dictated whether a file is moved or just copied, this is governed by the appropriate application (WinZip, WinRAR, 7zip).

But nony wrote: "In explorer it behaves as expected." So why that difference? (Though I'm not sure *what* to expect here...)

If I assume your assumption to be correct, then how would you explain that in explorer the drag dropped files are moved instead of copying. The drag drop from winrar in explorer moves files from the temp folder to the destination(correct method) but in XY the files are copied from Temp folder to destination, leaving behind the temp files.

Maybe, for your case, the temp folder is on another drive, so files are moved by default?
Because, if you do not copy/move all files, it would be a problem that some are left behind? So I think the temp folder should be handled by the packer, not by another program maybe using it?

There seems to be a shadow of confusion, because I was under the impression that you meant copying/moving from an archive rather than a temporary folder. I don't have WinRAR to hand right now, but can you try something for me please? Do DnD using right mouse button, instead of the left one. Do you get any context menu? If you do, is 'Extract Here' (et al) one of the options? If it is, can you try it and see if you get any temp files remaining? Do you keep extractor's window open when you check for temp files? If yes, what happens when you close it?

However, I am leaning towards this not being XY's fault. When you DnD a file from an archive (and that archive is open in WinZip/WinRAR/7zip/etc) into an WE/XY, it's not WE/XY that is in control of the operation, it's WinZip/WinRAR/7zip/etc. An extractor is the one that extracts into a temporary folder and then makes a call to transfer file into the target location. Judging from your words, there appears to be a difference on the type of call (move vs. copy) that it makes when DnDing into non-Explorer apps. Should XYplorer (can it?) do anything to make itself more "compliant" or should makers of archiving software make allowances for non-Explorer applications?

The temp folder is default system where it ought to be.

The DrapDrop operation of files in Winrar will use temp files. The Extract here or similar will directly write to destination.

I would say the culprit to be XY as the same command is being passed to explorer as it's being passed to XY. It might be possible like zer0 said, Don may have used copy instead of move(if that's possible). Just to make sure I tried another FM and the result is similar to explorer.

In explorer, when you open a archieve and perform drag drop, the files are moved from the temp folder to destination and when you close the Winrar window then the temporary folder is removed. Winrar extracts the files to temporary folder in temp folder. In Xy neither temp files are being moved nor the temp folder is being removed.

Works fine here (XP) with winzip and winrar: XY copies the files from the temp dir, but both archiver apps clean the temp dir after the work is done.
