Different classification of file types

Post by ivan »

I've noticed that XYplorer refers to RAR archives as WinRAR archive in the type column. At the same time Windows Explorer refers to it as RAR file. Why is there a discrepancy in the descriptions? This makes a great deal when you sort by Type so XY puts files at the bottom because of W in WinRAR, but WE doesn't because R in RAR file.

Once again a question arises: what's the measuring stick? Right-click (in either file manager) on such file, click Properties. What does it say for type of file? It says RAR file on my screen. Therefore, I think XY should change its description of .rar files and start referring to them as RAR files. After all, not just WinRAR can work with .rar files

You know, XY doesn't decide that RAR files are "WinRAR archive" because it loves WinRAR, it uses as Type whatever it founds on your system. For RAR files just like for any files as a matter of fact, whether it's on the Type column or on Properties on Panel.
For you it says "WinRAR archive", but for others it probably doesn't.

As for the differences between XY & WE, I don't know, all I know is that over here they both say the same, which just happens to be "WinRAR archive" as well, but that's just a coincidence (or not, that thing is great! ;)).

Hey, consider yourself lucky! On my system, a ".rar" file shows Type as blanks which ties back to this prior thread of mine for related issue that still remains unsolved since 2006 or so! http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic.php?t=1290

BTW, on my W2K sys, WE shows it as "RAR" not "WINRAR Archive".

Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Hi,

On my computer it stands "WinRar archive" both in WE and XYPlorer.
I am running on XP.

Do you have any more compress software installed? Like 7-zip etc.

Same here, it says RAR archive in both managers.

Open Windows explorer (there is probably an alternate way to get to the setting but I am familiar with this)

Select: Tools \ Folder Options \ File Types

scroll through the file type box until you find the rar extension (not the r1, r2, etc) and then select it.

Click Advanced and in modify the top text field to display whatever you want for the filetype name.

Click OK

Click OK again

Exit completely out of XYplorer and restart.

As far as I can tell XY reads the value from here. As to why you have a discrepancy I have no idea...

It also works as expected for me (XY 7.40.0000 on WinXP SP2). Both show the same even after changing in the manner described by eurytos or by mucking manually in the registry.

At first I thought that maybe there was a discrepancy in per-user vs. machine wide file type registration, but on my system XY handles it fine. Then I thought that maybe there was an issue with a 32-bit XY getting proper info from a 64-bit system registry, but I see you're running a 32-bit system.

Maybe there's some Vista voodoo going on - some non-obvious difference in how Vista handles the file type registration?

Perhaps, but it is important because it affects how files are sorted so XYplorer should follow the system-wide standard.

P.S. I do have WinZip (v11) and 7-Zip installed.

I'm running Vista here and XY and Windows Explorer show and sort the Type identically. Interesting that yours doesn't.

True, but notice how Notepad++ does the same thing...many other apps can open *.txt files, but Notepad++ is the application that's associated with that file type, just as WinRAR is associated with .rar (and .zip on my system).

Just based on my experiences, XY doesn't have complete control of what is shown, as it appears to be based on users current config, and as shown by varying results above, thus XY may be limited in what it can/cannot do.

Really weird thing. I restarted a couple of hours ago and now both XY and WE show RAR files as RAR files so it seems to have worked out.

What I am quite concerned about is why JustinF has it different from me? :?

I'm fairly sure that it has something to do with which zip-type products have been installed and in what sequence...I've seen similar things before.

Ivan,

I am not 100% sure but if you have installed Winzip or/and 7-zip after you installed WinRar,
one of the may have changed the type from "WinRar Archive" to "RAR Archive".

This has happen for Justin regarding text files, the type is not "Text Document" it is "Notepad++ Document"
