Yeah, my signature really has grown to an impressive list. 8)

Now, as I will have to remove "Folder Specific Settings" in the near future, I couldn't resist to add Don's newest idea (CMA) to my signature, just to keep up the challenge.

Let's talk about Folder Specific Settings (FSS)

Post by admin »

Being in the FSS meditation process -- please do not disturb with wishes!

But I have a little thing to tell you about: To make some space AND because it's better anyway I plan to remove the Fonts submenu (under menu View) and move the whole Font settings stuff into a new page in Configuration called "Fonts"! :)

And guess what, where Fonts has been a new submenu called "Folder Specific Settings" will come into existence! :)

CMA... :) ... that's Custom Mouse Actions? Sounds nice, but is it correct and clear? For me a "mouse action" is what you do with the mouse (click, double click...), but what's customized here is the effect of such an action. So maybe better CME (Custom Mouse Effects)?? Hmmm.. "effects" sounds misleading. So, we need a new term here, folks!
jacky wrote:Also, would those events include other "kind" of events, such as "Location Change" or "Item Selection" ? Might be nice as well...
Yes, why not.

So, maybe the "Mouse" should not be part of this term... maybe simply Custom Events (CEV - I want to have 3 letters...).

Maybe something like EHA (Event Handling Actions) or OEA (On-Event Action) or CEA (Custom Event Actions) or similar?
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!

Yeah, it's not more than an amateurishly created temporary solution, a placeholder until an appropriate term is found.

I think EHA (Event Handling Actions) or CEA (Custom Event Actions) are already quite good. Another one is perhaps CET (Custom Event Triggers)...

Whatever it is called in the end, it will be a great feature! :D

I think CEA (Custom Event Actions) works quite well.

8) Thanks! Though I also realized that maybe it needs to be 'Customized'? Anyway, I'm :D

Well in my mind this has never been associated with the mouse, if anything I associated it with scripting. I do think CEA works nicely, yeah.

Let's talk about Folder Specific Settings (FSS)

Post by admin »

Back to FSS.

I'm having a little terminological problem: How to best phrase (for menu captions) the two fundamental actions of FSS:

(1) "Always apply current settings to current folder"
(2) Stop doing (1)

Maybe simply:
(1) Save Settings
(2) Remove Settings

???

I also need better captions for:
(3) "Update stored settings to current settings"
(4) "Restore current settings from stored settings"

TIA
Don

or

Event Manager? This gives it more scope

hmm... like that I'd say:
(1) Use Folder Specific Settings
(2) Use Global Settings
(1) & (2) being options, right? I mean where one of them has to be checked (thus the other not)
(3) Save Current Settings As FSS
(4) Load Folder Specific Settings
So is (4) to load FSS while option (2) is activated? Then when going to another folder, would "global settings" be restored (as with (1)) or do they become the new global settings? Is it too early for questions? What time is it anyways?

What does Explorer uses ? Are there any "standards" in that area, or labels users might be expecting/be familiar with ? Anyone who's used FSS before might probably be of better help here...

Well, sorry that I can't help you with the proper phrasing but I think it would have been more user friendly to define "templates" for DEFAULT, PICTURES, DOWNLOADS, etc. ("Save current setting as...")
After that you could assign such a template to a folder or a folder and all of its sub-folders (should also be possible in Tools - "List Management"). If a folder has no template assigned XY should use DEFAULT.

If you already have done it that way, sorry, just forget everything I wrote.

Custom Event Manager could be name of the dialog that handles setup of Custom Event Actions, but as related to indivdual entries, CEA makes more sense, IMO.

Yes, almost: it's a toggle but split in 2 commands (add + remove). I don't want to use a toggle command in that menu because the current state is not visible (unless you have the new soon-to-come FSS toolbar button which will tell you whether the current folder uses stored settings or not (= inherits any previous settings).
So (2) will be disabled if the current folder does not use stored settings because there is nothing to remove. OTOH (1) can stay enabled even if the folder does use stored settings: in that case pressing the command would update the stored settings for that folder.

(1) Save/Update settings
(2) Remove saved settings ... hmmm

Well, I think it is a toggle, but that it can't be set to "use FSS" until they have been saved by a separate function...once stored, then they can be toggled on/off...

And the other functions needed are to:
1) reload from saved, presuming you've tried an experimental setting and then want to undo that.
2) delete saved sattings to clear out unneeded junk

So I see menu with one toggle and three functions:
toggle = use FSS or not
functions = save / reload / delete

Addendum : Also would need some way to define that these settings apply to a group of folders, so that we'd not need totally unique settings for hundreds of folders, but could use one as a common base for pictures, one for music, etc.
