64bit crashing on right click in folder tree

Post by TheNaturalCraft »

Main computer:
XYplorer version: 28.10.0500 64-bit
Windows Version: 10 Home Build 19045.6466
Screen scale 100%

Second Virtual Machine:
Microsoft Hyper-V version 9 VM
Always on, hosted on Windows Server 2019
XYplorer version: 28.10.0500 64-bit
Windows Version: 10 Pro Build 19045.6466
Screen scale 100%

I recently updated from the 32bit to 64bit version and soon after XYP began to occasionally crash when right clicking a folder in the tree.

Specifically, I have multiple tabs open and will select a file/folder, click COPY/CUT from the tool bar, then right click on a folder in the tree to choose paste and that's when the crash happens. XPY simply ends and I have to relaunch it to resume what I was doing. It happens when right clicking a tree folder in the same tab or another tab. This is an intermittent bug. I would guess that it's happened 4-5 times on each of the computers listed above in the last week (since I updated to 64 bit). This issue did not happen in the 32 bit version.

I located a crash dump file from the most recent crash, though I don't see how to attach it here in this post (file is .dmp extension). Please advise if this file is wanted.

Thank you!!
TNC

Does it also happen if you tick Configuration | General | Menus, Mouse, Usability | Context Menus | Hide shell extensions from shell context menu?

I'll test and report back.

I've enabled the option you specified and haven't had any crashing. I've just disabled it again as I need the extended system functions in that list. We'll see how long until it crashes again, if it does.

It's not more than a mild nuisance but thanks for looking into it.

If it comes back, here is how to get rid of it: https://www.xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=ctxcrash

Hm, I experienced right click crashes as well. They seem to happen after some minutes or hours of use. I select files in a folder, and right click on a sub folder in the list view, which then crashes XYplorer without an error message or log entry. My shell extensions have not changed in a long time, and they didn't crash XYplorer in the past.

Oi, after enabling "Hide shell extensions from shell context menu", XYplorer can't handle right clicks on two or more files with different extensions:

Code: Select all

Error: -2147023741 (0x80070483)
Desc: Automation error / No application is associated with the specified file for this operation.
Dll: 0
Proc: SCMW@0

Source:
XY ver: XYplorer 28.20.0100 (64-bit) - Lifetime License Enterprise
OS: Windows 10 Pro N, 64-bit, Version 22H2, Build 19045.6809 (10.0)
Locale: 2057 (en-GB)
ANSI: 1252, ACP: 1252 (ANSI - Latin I)
Font: Verdana 9.75, Verdana 9.75, DBCS: No
DPI: 96 (100%), 3840x2160

Date: 2026-02-02 21:27:33

When I select files of the same file type/extension, everything works as expected. When I select a mix of folders and files, right clicking the folders shows the context menu for the selection, but right clicking a file will show the error again. I can reproduce this bug in a fresh installation with only "Hide shell extensions ..." changed (enabled).
Also, the error description is "Automation error" on the first right click, and it changes to "No application is associated with the specified file for this operation." on subsequent right clicks. The rest of the error message is the same though, including the error code itself.

I'd like to test XYplorer some more to find out why it crashes, but not being able to use the right click context menu in 99.9% of cases is kind of a show stopper ...

Not here. Can anyone else reproduce this?

I can...

Fresh 28.20.0100 instance, only changed:
[x] Hide shell extensions from shell context menu

These two files are selected:

Code: Select all

D:\Users\Highend\Downloads\Share folders (needs admin permissions).ps1
D:\Users\Highend\Downloads\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers.reg
Right click on the selection:

Okay, not on Win8.1. I'll look into it on Win11 later.
