When copy a large Quantity of files, the XY goes into pause.

Post by kentcl »

This problem I have had for a long time and it is the same problem regardless of Computer or Operative System.
When I copy a large quantity of files XY stops in Pause mode,
I thin that has something to do with the Power settings of the Computer. My normal settings for the Power and sleep options in the System. The Settings are:
Sleep: Never
Screen: 15 minutes

So if the program goes into Pause mode when the Screen turns off, that's a major obstacle (at least for me). I don't know whether this is the issue, perhaps someone has a better explanation (and solution) for this. The other obstacle is what happens if I turn off the Screen completely.

How large is "a large quantity"?
When does it go into pause?

Hello
Better late than never, here is the data that I have and a picture of the program while in pause.
The quantity was 794 files with a total size of about 211 GB when I tried it again today. When it went into pause I don't know because of the total time of copying was more than an hour and the screen was in sleep mode.
The copying speed was about 40 MB/s. No other program was active during the session.

That is shell copy, owned and controlled by Windows. Only Microsoft knows why it pauses (but it's interesting, never heard of auto-pause).

If you want XYplorer to handle the copy then enable Custom Copy (Configuration | File Operations | File Operations | Custom Copy Operations | Use Custom Copy), and with such a large job do it in the background (Configuration | File Operations | File Operations | Background Processing | Enable background processing).

You mean the "Pause Processing?" dialog comes up by itself?

Exactly. I am now doing a number of large file copying just to check that I didn't push the button by mistake.

Something is sending a keystroke to the window. But I'm surprised that your other screenshot shows a paused shell copy, which surely needs a different key than XYplorer's progress dialog :?

Does it also happen when XYplorer is not the top window?

I'll share a guess what may have being happening: if that was a number of copy tasks, when next task started XYcopy pops-up while user may be printing smth - that's how default selected Pause button gets "unwillingly pressed". Had this situation for myself, so maybe i'm not the only one.

I have just ended a copy operation of countless of files in different folders and partitions with a total of about 1 TB. During the transfer I didn't used the computer for other purposes and the complete operation did work perfectly without any errors at all.
That assures me that what happened the last time was, what you thought, a mistakenly pushed pause-button. So now we can leave this issue with the knowledge that, large copy/move operation doesn't always work in Windows 10 but, with the changes you advised me to do, works 100% in XYPlorer.
One suggestion though, wouldn't it be useful to have an acknowledge question, before "pausing/cancelling" copy/move operations in the background to avoid my kind of mistakes?

I don't think so. Pausing is completely harmless, you can resume the process at any time. Canceling might be something you want to do as soon as possible in case you made a mistake.

Well okay, when canceling, you could pause the process first and ask "Are you sure?" and cancel only if "yes", but resume if "no". What does everyone think?

Yet i'd wish there be an option to make XYcopy not popup on next/new task started, but guess it will be solved with future x64 migration.
