xyplorer. I'm just curious if there is a bug with something in Windows itself causing XYplorer to do this. I've not used Total Commander is a while, maybe I can give that a shot, although no other apps have issues deleting a PDF file such as XnView, etc, so why would Total Commander have an issue(?). As far as I can tell it's just XYplorer.

Per my previous reply, I'm unable to locate an older version that works without issue. I've gone as far back as 22.70.0000 (11-Jan-2022)... If I wait an hour or so after launching XYplorer the file (PDF) is locked and a PDF was never been opened or Adobe PDF opened. Rebooting does not solve the issue. Closing XYplorer the file can be deleted, or deleted by Explorer. I'll try an earlier version sometime.

Can't explain it.

I also looked into the XY64 issue mentioned in this thread and could not reproduce it.

Tried deleting with current 25.50.0000 (30-Jan-2024) version. I created two new copies of GRID_PAPER_0001.pdf and attempted to delete the third then both the second and third. Seconds apart.

This is the error when attempting to delete from Explorer while XYplorer is still open. If I close out of XYplorer the files can be deleted.

Unsure if the ICO in the Windows dialog when deleting from XY and Explorer has anything to do with the issue or part of.

It's the standard icon for the "file in use" dialog in Windows 10/11.

XYPlorer continues to lock PDF files, and finding a version that doesn't is proving difficult. Surely, there are other users facing the same problem.

I updated LockHunter, and initially, it didn’t detect anything. However, after a few attempts and keeping LockHunter open while refreshing the app while deleting, it eventually identified xyplorer.exe as the issue. Lockhunter did not produce any other information. I am unsure why it detected three instances of the PDF file while there is only one. I have not troubleshot it further than five minutes.

It's not a critical issue for me, though others might find it more disruptive, especially since closing out of XYplorer and then resuming work can be cumbersome. For me, it's more of an irritating bug - having to open Explorer to delete something, then reopen XYplorer and navigate back to where I left off. This is where profiles really come in handy. :biggrin:

Thank you. Unfortunately I have nothing new to say. Closing the preview (and thus removing any locks) works 100% here (using PDF-XChange). Are you sure you're not using Adobe for previewing? You can check this by previewing a PDF and executing this script from the address bar:

Code: Select all

text get("previewhandler");

I don't have an address bar and am trying to figure out how to add it. It's been a decade or so since I last configured my setup. I don't use file previews, as I have a dedicated application for those. I experimented by checking the PDF option under previews, closing XY, then unchecking it, and closing XY again - trying both with it checked, unchecked, and then creating a new PDF copy. However, when I tried to delete the file, I encountered an error stating it was locked by XY.

I don't believe I had a PDF file selected then.

Here is the output I receive now.

Selected PDF file and the following message.

Entered string

Code: Select all

text get("previewhandler");
Displays {3A84F9C2-6164-485C-A7D9-4B27F8AC009E}, else Micsoft Preview Handler

Changed from Microsoft Preview Hander to {DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193} Adobe PDF Preview Handler

Code: Select all

1. Press the Windows key + R and type RegEdit to open the Registry Editor.
2. Navigate to the following path: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\ShellEx\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}.
3. Locate the Default string on the right side, which has a unique value.

If the Default string's value is {3A84F9C2-6164-485C-A7D9-4B27F8AC009E}, you're using the Microsoft PDF Previewer.
If it's {DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193}, then you're using the Adobe PDF Preview Handler.
Selected PDF file again and the following message displays. Same. *Edit: "Same," error when attempting to delete the PDF file and the file is locked by XYPlorer.

I'd suggest to try PDF-XChange instead of Adobe.
