Thumbnails of PDFs not Updating Automatically

Post by Bumpyride »

Newly added PDF files do not automatically update the Thumbnails view but show the application icon instead. I can work around this by first viewing the folder in Windows Explorer and cycling through the three icon views (Medium-sized, Large and Extra large). This updates the thumbnail images of the newly added PDFs.
I then have to restart XYplorer and now the new PDF thumbs will display in XY Thumbnails View #1 (64x64) and View #2 (128x128).
View #3 (192x192) never shows any thumbnails and always displays only the PDF application icon (Foxit).
My setup: Win10 x64 with 32-bit Foxit Reader 9.7 and XYplorer 23.80.
My Thumbnail settings:

This doesn't happen here using PDF-XChange under Windows 11 as thumbnail provider
and your configured sizes.
Did you try another thumbnail provider like SumatraPDF ?

Thanks for the heads-up on PDF-XChange. I like the look of it and will take it for a spin as soon as I get the chance - it seems to have everything Foxit Reader has.
And yes, I do use SumatraPDF, but only in portable mode with the file association set to EPUB - not as thumbnail provider.
Which version of PDF-XChange are you using, 32/64 bit, installer/portable? I remember reading something about XYplorer needing a 32-bit thumbnail provider, as XY is also 32-bit.

I have PDF-XChange Editor Plus version 9.5 build 366.0
XY has no problems to use x64 preview and thumbnail handlers.

That's good to know because I was wondering about that but the FAQs say "XYplorer needs a 32-bit preview handler for PDFs" https://www.xyplorer.com/faq-topic.php?id=PDFpreview.

Sorry, it took a while to make the change but can happily confirming that Horst's solution worked - problem solved!
Installed PDF-XChange Editor and set it as default PDF viewer - now the thumbnails update automatically.
Thanks!
