Optimal-Sized Columns in List View

Post by soja »

I didn't find this wish already posted, but then again, the forum does not let me search for "list" (even in topics only!)... =)

Of all the views, I use List View most often. Ever since Vista introduce the feature, I've wanted to see "optimal" sized columns in XYplorer, where each column in the view is sized to the width of its largest item. This means that columns will have different sizes in the same view. It's the way that Windows Explorer in Vista and 7 work.

Bonus points if the Grow/Shrink/Autosize Column commands work relative to each column size.

I suspect this is a tough ask because the VB6 form controls don't readily support this, but you never know.

Unless the transatlantic flight tiredness is getting the better of me, this sounds like Tools > Customize List > Autosize Columns :?

I had thought so too at first, but on second read I decided soja was referring to the columns of items when the list is in List View, and not the data columns in Details view.

For example, if you had 1000 items named "####.txt" and one named "This is one of the longest file names I've ever seen in my whole entire life.OMG" instead of all columns being wide enough for the longer file name, only the column containing it would be. The rest would be wide enough for "####.txt".

In other words, each column of items would be sized independently of the others.

I love the idea, since it can sometimes be annoying to see XY waste a lot of space when one file has a longer name.

Yes, Explorer does it indeed in Win7, and so do all file managers that are build around the Explorer controls. Not so XY. Unfortunately this is a bit non-trivial... maybe some day when I'm bored...

Would still be useful, but no deal breaker.
