64-bit context menu still painfully slow...

Post by Jeff Bellune »

XY version 16.30

It takes 2-3 seconds to appear every time, not just the first attempt. Unusable for me and quite frustrating on a dual Xeon 12-core hyperthreaded machine running Windows 10. Some apps don't provide 32-bit context menu support, or don't function from XY's version of the context menu (one may be a symptom of the other). Mp3tag is one example. I had to create a toolbar button to get files shown in XY to open in Mp3tag.

Is there any way to increase the performance of XY's 64-bit context menu?

Thanks,
Jeff

Mine is very slow the first time (as you said, 2-3 seconds) but not as bad after the first invocation.

Use NirSoft's tools (shelmMenunew, Shexview, shmnview, etc) to view and enable/disable context menu handlers, potentially can trim some load time by disabling those you don't need.

I can confirm that the 64-bit context menu of MP3Tag doesn't work from inside the 64-bit context menu of XY. Maybe a problem with ContextMenu64.exe...

Two things to mention:
- MP3 Tag also installs the 32-bit shell context menu which works fine from the normal context menu of XY (at least here)
- I can't confirm slow loading times of the 64-bit XY context menu. Mine needs approx. 250 ms to open. Even on the first time... If you use shellexview from nirsoft, how many (non Microsoft) context menu handlers are registered? I'd try to disable ALL (again: non Microsoft ones) and then see if the loading times improve. Activate one by one again and after each check if the 64-bit context menu of XY is still working correctly (or: fast^^)

Huh? Don't understand.

Mine is also fast enough, around 400 msecs.

Typo: I meant "the 64-bit context menu of MP3Tag"
Fixed it in that post...

Well, patience, I know that ContextMenu64.exe is working on a new version. Let's wait and see what's coming.

I think you meant to type "Mesh" somewhere there. (Or did Mesh manage to make a sentient, self-replicating ctxmenu64 ?)

Thanks for pointing me in that direction. CCleaner has a similar facility and it worked to help isolate the offending item. Here it is:
File PhotoStreamsExt Apple Inc. All users C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Internet Services\ShellStreams64.dll

Once I disabled that context menu entry, the XY 64-bit context menu got a lot faster (~1 sec to open).

Cheers,
Jeff

I probably misread the notes for an earlier XY beta build for version 16.30 that seemed to indicate that a faster version was incorporated into that build. Something about the first instance being slow but subsequent calls being much faster.

My apologies. I will be more patient. :)

Cheers,
Jeff

Well, menu speed increased in 16.40, still takes about 1-2 secs to open, but definitely faster then before. :appl:

But there seems to be another problem, it is missing ''Rename" option? Original vs xyplorer.

Yes, this is by design. (I'm sure I mentioned it in the change log when 64-bit context was added.) Rename would need a callback to XYplorer to open the inline rename box. This is not supported currently.

But really, does anybody here rename via context menu??? What's wrong about F2?
