Are you saying the only recourse left is the registry edit?

If a deep breath is taken and that is attempted, what would the entry be as have up-graded to the PDF-XChange Editor.

Am willing to give it a shot if you're confident the PDF's will return. :appl:

What's your OS?
Do you see PDF thumbs in Explorer?

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium (Service Pack 1), 64-bit (6.1)

Yes, everywhere. I.e. List View, File Information (at bottom) and Preview Pane (at Right)

I'm on Win8.1 Pro. I don't know for sure whether this works on Win7 (but I think so). This is my complete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDF-XChangeViewer.1\shellex node in registry:

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDF-XChangeViewer.1\shellex]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDF-XChangeViewer.1\shellex\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}]
@="{CF822AB4-6DB5-4FDA-BC28-E61DF36D2583}"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDF-XChangeViewer.1\shellex\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{B2F55D43-C7A4-4B7C-90D7-7A860DFA9F2A}"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PDF-XChangeViewer.1\shellex\{E357FCCD-A995-4576-B01F-234630154E96}]
@="{EBD0B8F4-A9A0-41B7-9695-030CD264D9C8}"

At first blush that looks intimidating to those who are registry-phobic. Notice all mentions are to Viewer. What do you estimate the probability of success with the new Editor will be?

Would dearly like to have the thumbs back again, but am not keen to be a Guinea pig.

No idea. The whole point here is that something has to install a 32-bit thumbnail handler on your system.

(It worked for me on XY, Win7, and Win8.1 without any problems simply by installing PDF-XChange-Viewer. Without any registry editing.)

Once I tried http://www.fixya.com/support/t5352123-e ... dler_vista
and it worked perfectly on my system Win7 pro 64 bit,
even without re-installing some PDF viewer.

Interesting read, thanks! Once again, Adobe is the one who screws things up.

Have read all the above solutions carefully and try to assimilate them them. Before trying anything and running the risk of shooting self in foot, what is hard to comprehend now is why PDF thumbs show up fine in MS Explorer but not XY. That would to indicate system is okay per se but fault lies here.

Any thoughts on this view?

One difference between WE and XYP on a 64bit system is that the first is a 64bit app while the latter isn't, which can mess up things with apps that don't cater for both bitness worlds (i.e. shell extensions).

Yeah, understand how that would do it. Looks like have to abandon all hope for a successful resolution.

It is painful to say this but it looks like only recourse is to revert to WE when needing to view PDF thumbs.

I came across this link while looking around to see if there were any other PDF quick view solutions.

http://pretentiousname.com/adobe_pdf_x64_fix/index.htmlFixes for 64-bit Adobe Reader preview handler and thumbnails[/url]

It brings up the registry changes as already discussed here but also goes into moire details of the preview handler problem than I've seen in other places. One thing mentioned was:
"If you have/had another PDF preview handler installed, such as FoxIt or PDF-XChange, then whichever handler was installed last will usually be the one which is used. Uninstalling preview handlers does not always put back the previous ones; instead, do a repair install or a re-install of the preview handler you wish to use so that it takes over the PDF preview handler registration. You can also do this by editing the PDF file-type in the registry. The tool above takes care of this and all the other issues so use that if you get stuck."

I've not yet tried any of the things discussed in this article. I found the link while surfing on my phone. Figured I'd post it here for comments first. There is no use in my mucking up something else if someone with more "under the hood" experience sees a reason any or all of this won't work. 3 years have passed since the article was written.
Might provide some new clues though. There are some links to IPreviewHandler topics. Above my head. :veryconfused:

Like aurumdigitus mentioned above, all of the previous comments have been with regard to Adobe Reader and PDF-XChange Viewer. What could be causing the problems with Editor.? :x (Frustrated rhetorical question only)
