PDF thumbnails, preview and MDBU not working
PDF thumbnails, preview and MDBU not working
Have just installed XYplorer 10.80. Great program and was especially looking forward to the thumbnail preview/Mouse Down Blow Up feature for PDFs – but it doesn’t work. Image formats eg jpg and gif, do, but not PDFs – no thumbnail, no preview (get a ‘navigation was cancelled’ - looks like a browser message? - message), no MDBU. Sometimes selecting the file (or MDBU) will cause the pdf to open in an external pdf viewer – in my case PDF-XChange Viewer (default pdf viewer, although I have acrobat reader 9 installed for when nothing else will open a pdf...
Preview PDFs is selected in Preview Formats under Configuration.
System is XP SP2.
Checking out this forum, it seems like this may be a problem related to this release (10.80), and/or PDF-XChange Viewer – others have had the same problem. But no clear solution. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Re: PDF thumbnails, preview and MDBU not working
Hi and welcome.
Two things to check would be:
1. installing the latest beta (XYplorer betas are generally quite safe); there was a fix in 10.80.0101 for a similar-sounding problem;
2. make sure your installation of PDF-XChange Viewer includes the Shell Extensions.

Try:
open PDF-XChange Viewer
click
Edit > Preferences > File Associations
check "Display PDF in Browser"
Otherwise re-install and choose the browser plugin (ActiveX) option

Re: PDF thumbnails, preview and MDBU not working
Thanks for your replies and suggestions.
Got it all working now - preview, thumbnails and MDBU. I uninstalled PDF-XChange viewer (using Revo Uninstaller) and reinstalled the latest PDF-XChange viewer (2.5.201) and made sure shell extensions were installed.
BTB - PDF-XChange Viewer in case you aren't aware 'offers' to install the Ask Toolbar - don't let it unless you want that pesky nuisance on your system!
Once again - thanks.

Re: PDF thumbnails, preview and MDBU not working
Some time ago I replaced PDF-XChange Viewer with their newer PDF-XChange Editor.
I'm unable to see my PDF's in thumbnails, MDBU or floating preview.
But, my PDF's will display in the Info Panel>Preview.
I've gone through my settings, Previewed Formats is correct and MDBU is set. With MDBU I can popup txt and doc (not docx) files but not PDF.
With Floating Preview I can popup txt files but not doc or PDF.
Searching the forum I found this topic and since it was relative to PDF-XChange decided to resurrect it instead of starting a new one with the same PDF question.
Any suggestions on getting the PDF's to display?
I'm using Ver 14.50.0000
Thanks

Unfortunately, no. Here's a related thread with additional info:kodyman wrote:Any suggestions on getting the PDF's to display?

I can't get it to work, either. Same situation, installed the latest PDF-XChange Viewer and made sure Shell extensions got installed as well. Also made XChange the default for handling pdf. Still no luck.
When you say the lower info panel preview does show your pdfs, does that mean they open in the panel itself or in a separate viewer that pops up?
Re: PDF thumbnails, preview and MDBU not working
It shows in the panel.

Re: PDF thumbnails, preview and MDBU not working
I'm curious Stef123, did you actually install the latest version PDF-XChange Viewer (you said Viewer) or the PDF-XChange Editor (kodyman said Editor)? I see that the viewer is now, as of today, revision 2.5.309. I'm still using v2.5.214, Free version. I haven't updated in a while, but maybe I shouldn't?
I ask because quite a few people using XY use PDF-XChange Viewer and I'm wondering, do we stay away from updating the "Viewer" or going for the "Editor" version, or both? Thanks.

Yep, absolutely correct. Viewer, not Editor, the latest free version, downloaded a day before yesterday. In my desperate attempts to achieve some way, any way, of previewing my files within XY, at least on my private machine.klownboy wrote:I'm curious Stef123, did you actually install the latest version PDF-XChange Viewer (you said Viewer)
I am not as lucky as kodyman, though. My info panel stays empty and opens up an instance of PDF XChange Viewer to show me the pdf. Seems like I just can't get rid of other file managers or other external tools for fast and easy preview browsing

Re: PDF thumbnails, preview and MDBU not working
UNtick "*.pdf, PDF-XChange Viewer Document" in "Configuration | Previewed Formats | Category: Web & Office Files" to get a thumbnails-like preview of PDFs in the Preview tab.

Partial success. Now there is no longer a disturbing instance of PDF XChange Viewer popping up, but the lower panel stays empty nonetheless, telling me "File type excluded from preview in configuration".admin wrote:UNtick "*.pdf, PDF-XChange Viewer Document" in "Configuration | Previewed Formats | Category: Web & Office Files"

I had the same problem at one time. http://www.xyplorer.com/xyfc/viewtopic. ... 946#p99191Stef123 wrote:Yep, absolutely correct. All of the sudden it started working again in the Info Panel. Can't say if it was tied to an XYP update, PDF-XChange update, MS update??? I wish I could tell you what I did to get it to stop but I have no idea.

I'm luckier than Stef. I have Info Panel > Preview for PDF's. But that's all.
No Thumbnail, MDBU or Floating Preview.

Probably toxic fall out from an earlier Adobe installation.
