Missing thumbnails

Post by GantzGraf »

Hello

I've been using the old free version, 5.55.002 for a long time and it's been pretty great. Thank you very much indeed for making it available. I happened to see a post on the XY Facebook page recently and was surprised to discover there is a new free version. I downloaded it to try it out and everything seems lovely but for one problem. My old version displays my Photoshop PSD files as thumbnails but I can't seem to get the new version, 14.30.0300, to display them. I even installed the XnShell extension in the hope that might fix it but it still won't show them. I've attached a screenshot showing the two versions of XY running.

Any ideas?

Many thanks for your time.

I figured it out. I went into the .ini file and found an entry:
PreviewPSDEmbeddedThumb=0
So I then thought that should be set to "1", changed it and now I have all my PSD thumbs!

I do also have many files created by the application, ArtRage which will not display as thumbs. They are .ptg files. Are there any plans to include that format?

You could test whether it's already supported by adding the extension to the list of previewed image files.

Thanks, Ralph. I didn't think to try that. However, I now have but they still won't display so I assume it's not supported. That's a real shame. I don't suppose there's anything else I can try to do?

Hello GantzGraf.
Here: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/fre ... sages/6185 is ArtRage Thumbnail Viewer plug-in, download arthumbviewer_win32.exe, install, thumbnails of the *.ptg files will be shown in XYplorer.

Heya GantzGraf,

first off, your issue with the thumbs being shown in WindowsExplorer will be solved, at latest once Don is back.

Until then we could continue to try. Since I'm (still*) not a thumbnail expert I would suggest to

1) check a "fresh" XY instance by entering ::fresh into the Address Bar or copying the XYplorer.exe to a tmp folder and run it. Are the thumbs still missing?

2) post screenshots of the (3) settings pages, so that the thumbnail experts here (there quite a few!) could have a look
- Preview>Preview
- Preview>Previewed Formats
- Preview>Thumbnails

Just formally: the in-XY-missing thumbs are visible in WindowsExplorer?

Cheers,
Filehero

Thanks for the suggestion, Slavaon. Unfortunately that wouldn't do any good because it's now redundant. The ArtRage installer now includes the ArtRage Thumbnail Viewer and it clearly did its job correctly because Windows Explorer does display the .ptg thumbnails perfectly. I've asked about this over on the AR forum too. I appreciate your help though.

Filehero, thanks for your help.

I certainly tried again with different instances of XY. I even downloaded it again to try that one. No luck though. Windows Explorer displays the .ptg thumbnails fine.

Here are the shots you asked for.

Depending on your OS bitness there could be a difference though since WE is installed in the same bitness as the OS and a lot of softwares don't install 32bit components on 64bit systems which are needed for XY.

Arthumbviewer_win32 works perfectly:

Here - Win 7 64 bit, ArtRage Studio is not installed.

Hi GantzGraf,

thanks for posting the shots. They indeed look fine, and I think the reason must be elsewhere.

Unfortunately I'm running out of ideas now. Two last ones
- does deleting/rebuilding the thumbs cache makes a difference?
- do you get the same problem when using a trial of the paid version?

Thanks again chaps. It seems you were correct about the vagaries of the bit level. I installed the thumbnail viewer shell extension and now suddenly have my ArtRage thumbs!

There is something odd though. If you look at the screenshots you can see that they're not behaving like the other formats. The PSDs and JPGs conform exactly to my settings in XY whereas the PTGs have an excessive amount of white border and also do not change in size when I create larger thumbnail sizes! The PTGs are also the only ones to have a little icon overlay on them. Strange.
