things you can learn

Post by Creat »

It's amazing how you sometimes discover features...

I followed a link to "the great software list" (here, where XYplorer is listed of course  ) from some post or signature (forgot which/where exactly) on this forum. Going through the list I saw the screenshot and noticed that the info panel doesn't stretch over the tree on the left. I then began searching for that option and TADA now I have more space in the tree when the panel is open (YAY!). Seriously, why didn't I ever think of just looking for this option, which certainly had to be there?

Anyway, just wanted to say: I'm so happy about thism it's frightening... just wanted to ... uhm ... share that :)

Oh, right: I found the option to be Window -> Arrangement -> High Tree (and it did take me about 4 or 5 minutes to find it, I was expecting it in the view menu) just for anyone else who runs a higher resolution (1600x1200 in my case) and prefers it this way so there isn't as much 'empy' space on the right of the panel.

GREAT option, so simple, so useful :D

and I know it's probably been there for a really long time and I just never saw it or thought of even looking for it, silly me ^^

bye

The high tree was born together with the catalog. Don't tell me you have been using the catalog with the low tree! And, please, don't tell me you never heard about the catalog!

 I have not been using the catalog, but I was aware of it...sort of...from reading the forum...it was added during that time when I was too busy with "work" as I recall...but now that I saw this post, thought I'd check out the "High Tree" opt! And...I like it, but given that I also prefer having a larger preview image, it may not be ideal for me...

However, I could see High Tree morphed into a Toolbar icon to make it quicker/easier to toggle via mouse...but maybe with a slightly different name? As "high tree" is not that obvious as to function...unfortunately, can't think of a better one at moment! :(

Good idea... I like "High Tree" -- the icon and its effect will make the meaning obvious.

Of course I've heard of the catalogue, but I don't use/need it. The only reason I often have the Info Panel open is that I often search for files, with my resolution it only takes about 1/3 of the screen width, so no reason to obstruct the tree with it (I have folders with an extreme amount of folders, like 500+). The only downside to me is that it also moves the status bar to the right, but I don't think that anything can (or should) be done about that.

And I agree with j_c_hallgren that the option name "High Tree" is not exactly intuitive (it didn't take me 4 or 5 minutes for no reason to find it :) ), but I have absolutely no idea of how to call it, or I would've suggested it already. Maybe somthing that focuses on reducing the with of the IP instead of the height of the tree/catalogue?
I also get the categorization in the layout submenu, but I would've expected it to be in the view menu. But that's probably just because the whole window menu seems confusing to me, I think of windows more like "open documents" like in word or acrobat reader and the like, not display components like address bar, tabs and so on. That's just my problem though, no reason to change anything about that, NOW I know where those are :D

bye

So...how about "Narrow Info Panel"? Since we have "Narrow Tree"...
Or reversing option...to "Full Width Info Panel"?

And after seeing Creat's post, I'd also say that I'd more likely expect to see it in View under a "Info Panel Style" option...in which case, then my above suggestions become "Narrow layout" or "Full Width"...

It's simple: menu View = content, menu Windows = form. As perceived from the perspective of "controls", which are things like tree view, list view, tab strip etc.

Conc. "High Tree": forget it, I'm very keen of this label.

Maybe, since "Window" can be confusing as mentionned, maybe rename "Window" to something else, like "Display" or "Layout".... :?:

Jacky makes a reasonable point, I think, and I'd go for "Layout"...
However, taking a look at Adobe Photoshop Elements, it uses "Window" for similar menu items...so...maybe 'as is' is best?

Not only Photoshop. "Windows" is the standard label for exactly this stuff.

I agree. The only thing I'd change is calling the menu item "Layout" instead of "Arrangement". ;)

Now that's an idea I could dig. But tell me first why you suggest that?

Because I think that it's more intuitive. JC's post made me look for the function and I thought that "Arrangement" is quite unusual. Some other programs I have are using the name "Layout" for this function. ;)

And like Statler, there are some things that we've not really paid much attention to or used before, but when they are mentioned here, we look at them for first time or a bit more carefully, and then realize that maybe a change would be an improvement!

And creating a separate thread is often not needed as change is very minor and/or is developed as result of back-and-forth dialog here on forum via an existing thread. :)

That's what I wanted to hear. Couldn't find it in any of mine.
