The one attribute that explorer has that most if not all "replacements" do not have is to be able to highlight say ten or twenty files and press 'enter' to open them.
Would this be easy to add?

It would not be too hard to add that.
I'm not sure though whether it'd be really such a desirable feature: it's already possible to open multiple files at one time via the Open command in the files' context menu. By pressing Enter, on the other hand, just the focused file is opened. This choice would be lost, if I'd make pressing Enter work exactly the same way as clicking Open does.
