Windows Download directory lags a lot.
Hello,
I'm having a problem only with the Windows Download directory. When I enter it or try to scroll around, the tree lags a lot, like a few seconds before it moves a little. After I move to top and bottom of directory for a few minutes it'll speed up but it will happen if I close XYplorer and open it again. I only have around 150 files in that directory so not anything big and I don't have image preview on. Just description list of files, 2 panes side by side.
I can go into any other directory, even some that have 500 files or more and it'll scroll right through them without lagging at all.
Sorry if this has been posted about before. I tried searching the forums but I didn't really see anything about this.
I've done suggestions in the Quick Start Guide about network drives (it isn't on a network) and excluding it from Windows Defender and a few other suggestions I could find to speed it up but nothing changes.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Larry

Have you added any columns to the list pane?

No extra columns, just the default 6.
I forgot to mention that this does the same thing on my laptop, which only has around 50 files in that directory. It also views the other directories without any lag. I'm running Windows 10 with regular updates.

Enter this in the XY address bar:
Do you get the same behavior in the new window that pops up?
Have you relocated your Downloads folder to a non standard location?

Re: Windows Download directory lags a lot.
hi! i would have this problem in this folder as well, but only when i had several EXEs and PDFs in the folder. same column layout as the default, nothing extra added.
what i did that sped it up tremendously was enable this setting :
Configuration | General | Refresh, Icons, History | Icons | [x] Use generic icons for super-fast browsing
and
Configuration | General | Refresh, Icons, History | Icons | [x] Apply to all controls
i also enabled a custom PDF ICO file because i felt the default one (used by Foxit Editor Pro) was causing lag.
*.pdf>pdf.ico under Tools | Customize File Icons

Yes, getting the same behavior in the pop-up window. Lags a lot only in Downloads directory.
And no, it's a default standard Windows install. Didn't move any of Windows folders.
Thanks,

I know you mentioned that you excluded XY from AV, but are you sure you did it properly.

Thanks for the tips. I had these set as you described already, I read it somewhere that it speeds it up. I appreciate the suggestions and help.GreetingsFromPoland wrote: ↑02 Aug 2023 17:18 hi! i would have this problem in this folder as well, but only when i had several EXEs and PDFs in the folder. same column layout as the default, nothing extra added.

Re: Windows Download directory lags a lot.
I had the exclude correct and I even added the whole directory to see if that made a difference but it didn't.
Thanks for the help, I'll just deal with the lag. It speeds up after a few minutes of me scrolling to the top and bottom of the directory.
I appreciate the suggestions,
Larry

Re: Windows Download directory lags a lot.
Just wondering, does it lag always, or maybe when smth is downloaded into directory and you're visiting it?
I just have sometimes same problem with XY being not so good about locations where files are being downloaded(guess due to non-stop auto-refershing list).

Re: Windows Download directory lags a lot.
Nothing downloading to the directory when I'm in it. I even checked for file names with strange symbols in them but didn't find anything.
I went ahead and created a Downloads 2 directory to move files into that I've downloaded and want to keep before backing up. When I enter that directory there is no lag at all, even with the same files moved. Just to throw it out there, I have a few other File Managers that I use that don't show any lag in the downloads directory but I like XYplorer the best so thought I'd post here to see if anyone else has the problem. I guess it's just my systems since it does it on the laptop as well, and those are different files. I have all the updates for Windows so I'm assuming it's got to do with another program maybe interfering with it even though I tried closing them and testing it.
So the problem was solved by just moving the files out of the default Downloads directory to another directory. I can live with that.
Thanks.
