Default Catalog with fresh installations

Post by admin »

jacky had the idea to deliver a little sample Catalog with fresh installations. FYI, here's a first try:
http://www.xyplorer.com/download/catalog.dat

(Yes, I should add a simple way to load another Catalog file...)

OMG, such a Switch-Catalog-On-The-Fly feature would be so great! It's one of the few things I miss.

Some quick ideas:

If current catalog is "dirty" prompt whether to save it or not, before switching to the new one.

Selection of new catalog via standard file open dialog, open at app data path. Or Input dialog (with MRU) and Browse button.

MRU list of recently opened catalogs in TB button "Catalog" 's context menu.

Another idea, found as soon as I had a look at this sample:

Possibility to merge catalog-files, i.e. import (=add) (part of?) contents of another catalog file.
(I would like to merge "my" catalog-defs with this sample.)

melikes this idea :)

Yeah, ability to use different Catalogs would be nice, the simple way to do it I'd say might be to deal with it like you do with Search Templates in a way : Catalog files have to be in <xydata>, and XY only list files catalog*.dat showing only the part from the * (using "Default" when none)

So in the list we'd have "Home Stuff" for the file "catalogHome Stuff.dat" (or catalog.Home Stuf.dat maybe)

The MRU list on TB ctxt menu sounds great, also would be to add in the INI file the name of the loaded Catalog of course.

And yes, the ability to import/export categories would be another nice addition.

BTW, let me say again that when Catalog is empty, there should be the items on ctxt menu to "import" Favorites, Tabs, etc as new category. Even if new fresh install are to have a default Catalog and so Catalog visible, it really should be there I think.

I already use my Catalog switcher script, but having it in-built in XY would be great especially with import/export options.

My immediate thoughts on this and its integration into the catalogue itself!

I would like to see in the catalogue a catalogue header that one can set up which has all the different catalogues available. ie. as one has Favourites with a list of links you now have Catalogues and a list of catalogue links.

Selecting any catalogue link would save the current and load the new one. The new one would inherit the catalogue header and list.

The catalogue files would be stored as catalog.dat1..datn but in the list be given user meaningful names

All that is needed is for a 'save as' for a new catalogue

The use of multiple catalogues opens up the scope for quick access and maybe ones dedicated for special uses - access links, scripts, programs, web links etc.

Plus, I would think that unlike with your script (but obviously you couldn't do any other way), if it's built in XY a restart would not be required.

Thanks for your ideas. The topic appears to be inspiring... :)

However, right now I'm totally into publishing 7.40, the shiny little summer edition. I'll be back...

Yes, I expect XY's catalog switcher to be lot more flexible.

Sure, a switch will happen in no time.

So for us who don't want to swap our Catalogs, how about a screen print of what's in this or a report/listing or similiar? Such that we can provide feedback if desired...
Still spending WAY TOO much time here! But it's such a pleasure helping XY be a treasure!
(XP on laptop with touchpad and thus NO mouse!) Using latest beta vers when possible.

You mean to test that catalog ? Just create a new folder somewhere and run this script:

Code: Select all

copyto <curpath>, "<xypath>\XYplorer.exe";
Then copy the file catalog.dat along with the XYplore.exe and start a new XY. Then you can do all the testing you want, and simply remove the folder and everything it contains when you're done! ;)

Well, serendipity's screen print was fine for now, (Thanks!), but I'll do that in future...I was just thinking that having to try out the sample wouldn't be needed for most of us, but I may be wrong.

The only minor adjustment I'd suggest making to sample is to add a bit of color to one category and one entry.
